Session Summaries by Geometry Tutors

Geometry Tutoring review by Michelle in La Habra, CA
Session 2: Today we spent a majority of our time focused on geometry. We spent the most time going through how to do proofs. In biology, we worked on photosynthesis. We went over how the electron transport chain works and what molecules are involved in this process. We also learned that the electron transport chain is part of the light dependent reaction. After the light dependent reaction occurs, we learned that the molecules produced are necessary for the light independent reactions. The two types of reactions are useful as they provide necessary components to each other, almost as if it was a recycling system.

The student and I worked through a study guide for two quizzes she has early this week on geometric proofs. She seems to be gaining confidence with proofs and the language associated with them.

The student and I reviewed for her upcoming geometry test. We went over the measuring angles, degrees minutes and seconds, and the unit circle. We also practiced problems with bearings, the law of sines, and the law of cosines. Finally, we went over ambiguous case triangles. She stated that she felt good about the test after our review.

The student continues to improve as she reviews material from old assessment exams. Her biggest issue is that she sometimes does all of the correct work, but falls for trap answers, like picking x when the question asks for 4x. She responded well to guiding questions today, and her ability to recognize and understand her own errors is improving. She is remembering strategies, equations, and concepts.

Geometry Tutoring review by Junior in La Habra, CA
The focus was on finding the volumes of a number of geometric solids: triangular pyramids, rectangular pyramids, rectangular solids, cylinders, cones, and spheres. The strategy was to find the area of the base (except for a sphere) of each figure and multiply by the height. If the figure is a pyramid, cone, or sphere, it is necessary to divide by 3. If a triangle is involved, take half the product of the base and its altitude. Given the diameter of a sphere, remember to divide by 2 to get the radius. The student has made very good progress on his last 3 worksheets with scores of 90 or better.

Geometry Tutoring review by Emigdio in La Habra, CA
The student and I finished going through her SOL practice test. The second half of the test was significantly more difficult than the first, and the student had a lot more questions about each problem. While going through this test took the entire session, it was very informative. At the end of the session, I suggest 3 topics that the student should review for the following session Wednesday. These were the congruence relationships of parallelograms, logical statements, and the trigonometric functions.
