Session Summaries by Tutors

Bell, CA tutoring
The student's teacher had indicated that word problems are an area that she has been struggling with. We devoted this entire session to ways or tools to approach each question. Our emphasis was more on determining how to solve the problem than getting the answer. She showed progress in this session, and we are likely to broach this topic again at the next session.

The student and I started the lesson by reviewing his Saturday school material. He had a good understanding of the Pythagorean theorem and concepts that go with it. We reviewed the Pythagorean triplets I taught him, and then I introduced him to basic trigonometry. He understood the material quickly and was able to apply it to his homework. We then worked on logic problems. The student really likes the brainteaser type problems and is doing very well on them. We then did half of the math test, where he got almost every question right. Overall, he is progressing and improving.

During this session, we reviewed for the student's final, which is tomorrow. We worked through her review sheet, which covered many topics including solving equations and inequalities, geometry, ratios, percents, and writing equations from work problems. She understood all the concepts very well. She was very confident in her abilities and knowledge of the material and I felt like she was well prepared for her test.

The student and I discussed a homework assignment. We are seeing some of the material we worked on over the summer come up in her class materials, which is awesome because now it is just a review for her. For a quiz this week, her teacher asked her to memorize all of the squares up to the number 20. She and I memorized all of the squares up to 10 over the summer so now she is ahead of the game and only has to memorize 11-20. Her teacher's material is also starting to include square roots as well, which she already knows since we worked on it over the summer as well. Her homework consisted of more exponent practice as well as some distributing and factoring. The factoring was similar in that it wanted the undistributed form of the equation, so we worked through that as well and she understood the process. We also did a little work on the order of operations, and I made sure she understood to do the parentheses and multiplication before adding and subtracting. All in all, I believe we accomplished a lot and she is starting to correct the small mistakes here and there that she is making.

Great session! We remembered most of what we covered about photosynthesis and the student was prepared with questions. Today we went through all of cellular respiration and she did a great job of keeping up. We went through glycolysis, pyruvate decarboxylase, Krebs cycle, electron transport chain, chemiosmosis, and did a final ATP tally count. She has a great start! I asked her to send me her notes so that I can review them.
