ISEE Tutoring review by Zainab in La Habra, CA
I worked with the student today to get an assessment of his abilities and determine areas of focus for the ISEE review. He has a good grasp of math concepts, but needs to be more familiar with interpreting tricky questions. We will work on strategies for breaking down words problems, as well as new concepts that he may encounter on the test. He knows a lot of vocabulary words, but has trouble with sentence completion. We will review strategies such as using context clues to overcome this. We will also work on strategies to tackle difficult vocabulary words that he has not yet encountered, such as root words. We will work on writing organized essays, sticking to a basic outline of an introduction, supporting paragraphs, and conclusion. Assignment - write an introduction paragraph and two supporting ideas for a prompt (What person do you most admire?).

ISEE Tutoring review by Elizabeth in La Habra, CA
We covered more quantitative reasoning problems including geometry and measurement. The student was very strong in the concept of lines of symmetry. He was unfamiliar with area, but familiar with perimeter. We worked on the concept of area and did more practice problems. I will also be sending a practice test that includes problems of area. We did a lesson on graphing points and he picked it up very quickly - he even asked if I could give him more problems! In addition, we went over sample problems in the reading comprehension section. He is a very strong reader and used strategies such as using context clues to correctly answer the questions. I also saw progress in the probability section. He had scored about 50% on the practice test but he got 90% of the questions we practiced today correct.

ISEE Tutoring review by Maxwell in La Habra, CA
I wanted to make sure the student had completely ingested all of the math information that he had learned the month prior. I started by looking over his test scores on the practice tests that I had told him to take once every two days over winter break. We went back over all the equations he would need to know and I wrote out a sheet of them for him to memorize between this week and the test. We then looked at converting numbers from percents to decimals to fractions. I followed with a practice test, which he scored a 90 percent on. The second session was really just about building the student's confidence. He knows all of the material, he's a bright kid, and he has more than enough time to complete each section and double check his answers. When it comes to math there is a certain mental block. I just don't think he believes he's a "math guy." It is that mentality that we broke down in this session. I started in verbal reasoning, which he scored in the 90th percentile. I pointed out how impressive it was and how many concepts that help him test high in verbal transfer over to math. We followed with reading, another high 90th percentile. Further positive reinforcement. Then we went in to the stuff we had been working on. He scored into the 90th percentile in math and didn't get a single problem wrong on the quantitative. A very important session; eye-opening for him as a student and me as a tutor.
