Session Summaries by English Grammar and Syntax Tutors

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Ashley in Meriden, CT
Today the student and I used skimming, making predictions, and summarizing to work on her reading comprehension skills. She did an especially good job in working through today's story, and I think that having her summarize portions of the reading (by retelling different sections in her own words) is an especially useful way to get her to understand and retain what she is reading. Her homework is for her to make up quiz questions based on the same story.

Today the student and I resumed our study of how to find the main idea of paragraphs and whole passages. We used articles from a children's news magazine to practice this skill. She did well with this topic and is improving in telling the main idea in her own words, rather than quoting directly from the article. Our last 10 minutes were spent reviewing simple past, present perfect, and past perfect tenses. She was able to use the rules for "gone/ went" to help complete the sentences correctly. I can tell that she is working hard and making progress.

The student's class has finished reading Slaughterhouse Five and together has completed a list of various literary devices used by Vonnegut. She has chosen to write about Vonnegut's frequent allusions to soldiers as innocent children - as in the reference to the 13th century so-called Children's Crusade in the book's subtitle. She brought three good examples, which we talked about to clarify the direction of the writing. We worked on the thesis, examples/quotes, and a clincher. We actually managed to finish it, make final corrections, and submit it through the class site.

Another productive session. We went over the guidelines for, and worked on a rough draft of, a four-paragraph essay on a short story that is due tomorrow. We reviewed the setting and context of Persepolis and what happens in "The Letter." We reviewed Things Fall Apart: direct and indirect characterization, plot, characters, setting. We went through a number of multiple-choice practice questions. We reviewed "Like the Sun" and discussed why the sun was chosen as a metaphor for truth, and that the truth doesn't have to be like the sun in every way for the metaphor to work. We reviewed metonymy and synecdoche. We reviewed The Analects and the Tao: the concept of maxims and how they are like proverbs. He took notes during the reviews. I think he would benefit from some mnemonic devices to help him link titles with plots.

We continue to work in the student's language arts book. She also is writing a report on a book she read about Queen Elizabeth I. I gave the report a preliminary look and made some suggestions for her to include. She has another book about Sally Ride to read and she will write a report on it as well. She continues to do well with the material.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Laura in Meriden, CT
The student and I worked together this week on antonyms combined with vocabulary. We played a racing game where we took larger words and found smaller words inside them. Then, for another activity, I had him define about eight different [larger] vocabulary words, a couple of which have been assigned to him in class this year. I let him define the ones he knew first, and then together we came up with tricks for remembering the ones he had more difficulty with. I then asked him to write a synonym for each word. Next week, we will work on reading comprehension.
