During today's session, the student and I continued practicing his essay-writing skills, specifically devoting our time to completing a synthesis-type essay (focusing specifically on selecting excerpts from the provided sources for body paragraphs and what to include in conclusions) and then starting work on a prose analysis prompt. With this latter prompt, he and I focused on what to highlight/use from the text provided, and how to craft thesis statements for this essay type. He is already an effective writer with regard to prose analysis essays, and we will practice them a bit more in future sessions to further develop his time management strategies and skill at picking out the most relevant examples from the passages to use. He continues to display a cooperative attitude throughout, and is very motivated to succeed. Before our next session he will be completing the body of the essay for us to review, after which time we will again practice conclusion-writing before moving on to another essay type.

Tonight we concentrated on an approach that can work for then Rhetorical/Analytical prompt. We reviewed these questions from five released AP language exams. I demonstrated to the student a paragraph by paragraph analysis which will yield plenty of ideas and plenty of specific, quotable lines. When writing this essay, we agreed that going in the linear order of the paragraphs makes the most sense. The question almost always asks something like "how does the author develop her arguments?" If we go in order, we show that development. I left him with the homework to finish Synthesis work.

We focused on working through AP questions by reading passages and answering questions. I suggested that rather than focusing on speed and trying to answer the mechanics, that the student would be helped by trying to decipher the meaning and purpose behind a passage, and the language choice of the author. Once he determined that was useful, his answers improved.

The student and I read his reader from school. While reading the story, he was able to read most of the words without support. The target sounds in the story were ow using "OW" and "OU." He is very good at sounding out words and reading them but needs practice on his fluency. His comprehension is good but will also increase with his fluency.

The student and I looked at dangling participles and played more typing games. His typing is still about 4-5 words per minute. We'll continue to look at grammar concepts in combination with typing practice, but I am encouraging him to practice throughout the week in order to improve his typing speed.
