Session Summaries by English Grammar and Syntax Tutors

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Michael in Bristol, CT
During our tutoring session I used a level 60 (6th grade) assessment in order to assess his reading level and therefore better cater my lessons to him. He is advanced for his age, however pauses sometimes and reads extremely fast. I plan to work on his oral reading fluency as well as noticing periods and commas. He has good reading comprehension skills as well that he displayed. We completed his math homework on negative integers and he seemed to apply good strategies such as circling important words in math problems and directions. I plan on bringing supplemental work based on what he is learning in school and what he is going to learn, as well as helping him with his oral reading fluency and homework.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Brooke in Bristol, CT
We worked on several activities with the student's word list today and introduced half of the remaining second-grade sight words. The student is displaying an improved attitude toward the subject matter. She appears excited to participate in activities and reports she is improving in reading. We continued to read from "Frog and Toad." The student's ability to sound out more complex multisyllabic and compound words is emerging. The student currently requires physical cueing, blocking out half of the word at a time, in order to perform this skill. We will continue to read from this book to practice this skill next week.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Lisa in Bristol, CT
The student only has six more sight words to master! Today we did lots of work with handwriting. The "before and after" letters are amazing! We reviewed his Beginning, Middle, and End project using his "Fly Guy" library book. We also read pages from his new "Nexo Knights" book that he got at the book fair, with me stopping for him to read the sight words. Next time he wants to write a story together!

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Suzanne in Bristol, CT
Today, the student had Spanish homework to review that involved numbers. She is also working on reading two books for her Language Arts class. We read chapters 3-5 in "Hoot" and chapters 1-3 in "Crispin" out loud and then discussed each book.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Tina in Bristol, CT
This was our first session, so today I had the student write a paragraph for me. We edited it together. The student then worked on strengthening his topic sentence by using an attention grabber worksheet. He then wrote a new topic sentence for the paragraph. For reading, he read out loud and has a homework assignment to give specific details about the story he is reading.
