We worked on linear equations today. The student had a little bit of trouble with confusing x- and y-intercepts, but a little bit of drilling helped to get her on better footing.

Tutoring review by James in Torrington, CT
We are making improvements with fraction operations. The student scored 17.5/20 on his quiz, which is a great improvement from where we were when we started (scores of 15/20). He completely understands decimal operations as he scored 24/25 on the quiz for that subject. I have complete faith that he will do very well on that section of his upcoming exam. Toward the end of the session, we focused on linear equations. He understands graphs and tables containing the data for a line, but transitioning to the equation is a struggle. So we started to work on understanding the slope of lines using Legos to build stairs of different heights. I think giving him an opportunity to build stairs 1 or 2 blocks high helped bridge the gap. For next time, we are going to continue to work with Legos to build stairs and translate those structures into lines and slopes of lines.

The student and I went over the problems she missed on her exam. She has a good understanding of the material covered, but just made some algebraic errors or used degrees in her calculator instead of radians.

We went over precalculus and chemistry topics. We covered trig graphs and their translations. The student understood these concepts well and had a few questions about them. In chemistry, we covered Lewis dot structures and molecular structures of molecules. I taught her how to figure out a Lewis dot structure as well as finding the polarity and structure of a molecule.
