Today the student and I focused on math and preparing for her upcoming cell biology test. She continues to be a wonderful student to work with. She has a very positive attitude towards her learning and is eager to be successful and try new strategies. We started by double-checking her math homework, which focused on adding and subtracting positive and negative integers. She has absolutely no trouble adding two positive integers but got confused about what to do when adding or subtracting a negative number. We used a number line to model how to add and subtract negative numbers. We spent about 30 minutes on this concept, and she seemed to have a strong grasp by the end of 30 minutes. During the second half of the session, we discussed how to prepare for her upcoming assessment. She is working on creating a "study guide" by rewriting her notes in her own words, creating flash cards, and using the online resources her teacher has to test herself on identifying cell parts. The idea behind these techniques is that she will spend 15-20 minutes using the resources to study each night until the test next Thursday. Note: We started to create our study guide on the computer but switched to paper because it seemed like it would be faster for her. I don't know if her school offers a typing course but it might be worth while to get her into some sort of typing program (there are free ones online like "type to learn") so that she can learn to type efficiently as many middle school teachers will start to request that her assignments be typed.

The student and I focused on algebraic story problems, equations of a line, and probability. I took note of where she struggled so we would know where to focus during the next session. We also worked on strategies for what to do if you are not sure how to start a problem.

Tutoring review by Ken in Duke University, NC
We covered the ISEE essay in detail. We read the instructions carefully, and talked about how to set up a good essay with a thesis statement, good examples, and a strong conclusion. We looked at 4 sample essay questions, and she worked on thinking of good examples from her reading and her personal experiences. We went over the verbal and reading sections one more time, and the student completed a timed section of both areas. We went over her incorrect answers and discussed strategies for questions with difficult vocabulary.

My session with this student today focused on helping him study for his upcoming biology quiz on the process of mitosis. He had a study guide, which we went through, and we also used his notes and worksheets from class to help him put together all of the material. He had a pretty good understanding of the sequence of events, but his biggest challenge was describing what happened specifically in each phase (prophase, metaphase, etc.). We also reviewed some vocabulary words that were tricky to him because they sound similar: centromere, chromatid, and chromatin. I had him draw and label pictures to help him actively review the material and then had him explain to me verbally (as if he were teaching me) how each process works. He had another day before his quiz, so we talked about what he should do the following day to prepare as well.

How can private tutoring with an accomplished tutor help you achieve your learning goals?

From assistance in elementary-level reading and writing to support in graduate-level math and science, private tutoring is an undeniably powerful educational tool. Tutors on the Varsity Tutors Live Learning Platform work with students of all ages, including adults, to improve their areas of weakness and to further develop their strengths. Perhaps you’d like to learn conversational French for an upcoming vacation, or your child has mastered simple fractions and is ready to work ahead in their math class. Or maybe your child is facing significant hurdles with reading comprehension and vocabulary. A tutor can help in all of these situations, as well as many others.

Multiple studies have shown that tutoring can lift average students to the top 2% (or 98th percentile) of their classes. Students who are currently high achievers can also benefit from improved grades and test scores. In fact, eight out of 10 students found that tutoring carried a measurable academic benefit, while 45 out of an examined 52 studies (nearly 90%) concluded that tutored students outperformed non-tutored students.

Tutoring is highly effective in part because tutors adapt their lessons to their students’ learning styles. Classroom lectures and textbook explanations can prove insufficient when a topic is unfamiliar or complex. To further complicate matters, teachers may have little time to provide additional support to their students. A tutor, on the other hand, works with you one-on-one via private tutoring or with a small group of students via Varsity Tutors’ live, online group courses (available in select subjects).

Tutors can accommodate visual, kinesthetic, and auditory learning styles, among others. They can also enrich their tutoring sessions with a wide variety of resources. These resources may include teacher-provided tools like assignment sheets and short readings, as well as supplementary tools like videos, manipulables, and graphics. The Varsity Tutors Live Learning Platform also equips students and tutors with test prep books for key exams like the ACT, GRE, and SAT and thousands of practice problems. If your college-age student is struggling in organic chemistry, for instance, a tutor may help them review bonding with a series of labeled illustrations and carefully chosen practice problems. If you are trying to perfect your Spanish pronunciation, on the other hand, your tutor might utilize videos, live conversation, and audio recordings.

Because all tutoring sessions are personalized with your learning style and precise needs in mind, you can spend as little or as much time as you need on specific concepts and skills. In a traditional classroom or at a traditional tutoring center, this is next to impossible. A tutor can even help you identify the areas where you need to spend more or less time if you aren’t sure what they are. For example, while one student may need to spend several months refining their time management techniques for the ACT or SAT, another student may be able to perfect their strategies in a few hours.

Ultimately, every person learns differently—and while typical classrooms aren’t equipped to teach to each student individually, tutoring is.

How are tutors on the Varsity Tutors Live Learning Platform selected?

A great tutor can make even the most impossible of tasks seem possible. Achieving this end, however, involves more than just subject knowledge. An effective private tutor is also an excellent communicator. An effective private tutor likewise has a friendly demeanor that fosters confidence in your developing skills and content mastery. With Varsity Tutors, tutoring sessions are a positive and enriching environment to learn in, no matter your age or current abilities.

If you’re thinking, “All of that might be hard to find in tutors near me,” or if you’re simply dreading the search for a reputable tutor, rest assured that Varsity Tutors eliminates all of the hard work. Our comprehensive screening and qualification process ensures that you learn from an incredible tutor without having to conduct dozens of time-consuming interviews on your own.

Tutors on the Varsity Tutors Live Learning Platform hail from competitive colleges and universities, including America’s Ivy League institutions. All tutors must successfully pass a background check prior to meeting with students, and their academic credentials (such as any certifications, grades, and test scores) are carefully examined. Whether you’re in need of a tutor who can help your child improve their PSAT performance or you need help with compiling your graduate school applications, we verify that your instructor has the expertise necessary to help you shine.

In total, potential tutors complete six steps that determine whether or not they pass through our extensive vetting process. These steps are also designed to assess each prospective tutor’s ability to teach in a clear, engaging manner. Tutors are asked to provide a record of their prior teaching experience, and must demonstrate their aptitude via simulated lesson plans and mock tutoring sessions. This prevents frustrating scenarios in which a tutor is highly knowledgeable about a given subject, but unable to adequately convey that knowledge to their students (an experience that many of us have had at one time or another, and that can waste precious time).

The tutor profiles displayed above represent just a fraction of the tutors who are waiting to assist you with your learning goals. Varsity Tutors can help you identify the one tutor from this broad pool who is uniquely suited to your learning style and needs—all without additional effort or work on your part.

When is tutoring available?

One of the advantages of connecting with a tutor on the Varsity Tutors Live Learning Platform is the flexibility that it affords you and your family. Maybe you’d like to prepare for a professional certification like the SIE or Series 7 after work, or perhaps your child must balance school, extracurricular activities, familial commitments, and tutoring. Tutors can meet whenever you’re free, which can be a significant advantage when you have very little time to spare. Love to study on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening? Prefer to meet with your tutor on a Saturday or Sunday morning? Not a problem—Varsity Tutors will help you find a tutor who has the subject matter expertise and the availability that you need.

Tutors can meet with you online further increasing the flexibility of this powerful educational tool. With online tutoring, you can work with the very best tutor for you, even if they live in California and you live in New York. This is a great option if you live in a rural area or require a tutor with rare or highly specific qualifications. If you find yourself asking, “How will I possibly find the right tutors near me?” Varsity Tutors can help you do just that.

Online tutoring sessions take place in a secure environment via desktop or mobile devices like a smartphone or tablet. Our Live Learning Platform includes features like video chat, a whiteboard, integrated practice problems, and subject-specific tools such as a document editor and a periodic table. Students can also opt to replay sessions for increased recall and understanding of session concepts.

For on-demand needs, you can also choose Instant Tutoring. With Instant Tutoring, you can select a subject to receive assistance in, click a button on the Varsity Tutors Live Learning Platform, and connect with a live online tutor in as little as 15 seconds. Instant Tutoring is ideal for homework emergencies, language practice, or last-minute test prep, and is currently available in all K-12 academic subjects. This includes subjects like algebra, biology, essay editing, and history.

If you prefer face-to-face interactions, tutors like those above can also meet with you in person. Tutors come to you, eliminating the need to travel to an inconvenient tutoring center or to battle traffic in general. Private tutoring sessions can take place in your home or at a nearby location of your choosing. You might find that it’s easier to focus at your local coffee shop or library. If so, your tutor can meet you there. If your child would rather work from your kitchen or living room, their tutor can do that too.

Interested in a live, online group course instead of one-on-one tutoring? Still need to balance a packed day-to-day life? We understand. New small group courses in select subjects begin each month. A variety of times, such as evenings and weekends, are available to suit a range of scheduling needs.
