I am an experienced and well-qualified essay coach, and a tutor in language arts and German. I also tutor students who are preparing for the SAT. I earned my B.A. in Comparative Literature from Columbia University and an M.A. in German from UC Berkeley, where I taught college German and received training in foreign language pedagogy. I love to learn, I am drawn to travel, and the experiences I have had enrich my work as a tutor. For me, tutoring is about more than making the grade or getting the right score; I always strive to foster insights and new skills that will help my students take charge of their own education.

I am particularly interested in helping people strengthen their writing skills. Whether you're working on your first high school essay or whether you're refining your undergraduate honors thesis, I can help!
I am a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. I've always loved Math and the Sciences: the hunt for the right equation to use, the unravelling of the mystery of the value of x. I want to show my students to see these subjects as I do: as a challenge, not a chore. I try to do this by making things simple and showing straightforward techniques that students can use on their own to sidestep mental walls, thus building confidence. I love to see them succeed academically and value the opportunity to be a part of that success.
I am known among friends for my love of puzzles, riddles, word problems, and mathematical challenges. I have a deep knowledge of pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus and a passion for teaching it. I also enjoy tutoring Spanish. While foundational vocab and grammar are important, I emphasize speaking and encourage my students to take risks. I believe embracing discomfort is critical to learning a language. Spanish has helped me to travel and live in different communities throughout the world. I strive to kindle a similar appreciation and passion for language in my students.
I'm Owen! I was born and raised in Portland, OR, but I currently live in Rhode Island, where I'm working towards a Bachelor's Degree at Brown University. If there's one thing to know about me, it's that I love to learn, no matter the subject. Learning is a life-long process that can take you anywhere in life. But this doesn't mean it's always easy. It would be my privilege to help you overcome the obstacles you encounter on this journey.
I am particularly passionate about language arts and I hope to help learners realize the beauty, complexity and joy of reading and writing well. I believe that education is transformative and necessary--and that one's education is a lifelong journey. In my free time, I enjoy reading, traveling, yoga and exploring Portland's many offerings.
I'm a strong believer that education can be fun, and address learning with a sense of humor and a positive attitude. My approach to learning tends to be very communication-based, and often driven by how the client I'm working with feels they learn best. As a result, I tend to provide structure and guidance in a more flexible learning environment.
I am not teaching, I write fiction (my debut book, From the Caves, won several national awards) and my shorter works have appeared in Poets & Writers, Longreads, The Kenyon Review, CRAFT Literary Magazine, New Orleans Review, and elsewhere. Learn more at theaprieto.com.
I am a graduate of The University of Portland, where I received my Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation, I worked for Nike as a Test and Validation Engineer on their Digital Sport products (FuelBand, SportWatch, Nike+, etc.) for one year before returning to graduate school. I am currently pursuing a Master's degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University, with a focus in design and manufacturing, and will graduate in the summer of 2015.
I am a writer of nearly ten years. In this realm, I have focused mainly on short fiction stories as well as the odd novel. In another life I also taught yoga regularly for a year, a discipline in which I learned to teach from my own experience and convey myself in front of large audiences.
I'm currently pursuing an MS in Statistics at Portland State University. Between Brown and Portland State, I have traveled to most countries in Europe as well as many countries in Asia. I have been tutoring Math and Statistics at PCC since 2013, and I enjoy working with students from all different backgrounds. I have tutored Algebra (both beginning and college level), the Calculus series, and even courses in Differential Equations and Linear Algebra. I particularly love Statistics because it is used in so many ways in the modern world! In my spare time, I love being outdoors and practicing meditation.
I am a patient, understanding and experienced tutor, mentor and teacher. My basic belief is that people learn best from encouragement and practice that brings insight, and never from ridicule or harshness. I look forward to working with you to improve your skills in the subjects and goals you want to work on.

Frequently Asked Questions
Varsity Tutors connects students across Portland's 6 school districts and 221 schools with personalized tutoring support. Whether your student attends a Portland Public Schools campus, a charter school, or is homeschooled, we match them with tutors who understand Oregon's educational standards and can support their specific learning goals.
Portland students frequently seek support in math, reading, and science—subjects that build foundational skills for success across Oregon's standards-based curriculum. We also work with many students preparing for standardized tests like the SAT and ACT, as well as those needing help with specific courses like algebra, chemistry, and literature that align with Portland-area school requirements.
Portland's average student-teacher ratio is 17.2:1, which means many students don't get the individualized attention they need in a traditional classroom setting. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to focus entirely on your student's learning style, pace, and specific gaps—something that's difficult in larger class environments. Research shows that 1-on-1 tutoring significantly accelerates learning compared to classroom instruction alone.
During the first session, the tutor gets to know your student—their strengths, challenges, learning style, and specific goals. They'll assess where your student stands relative to Portland-area grade-level expectations and Oregon standards, then create a personalized plan. This foundation helps ensure every subsequent session is focused and productive.
Yes. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who understand Oregon's learning standards and how they're applied in Portland schools. Whether your student needs to strengthen skills in reading, math, science, or social studies to meet state benchmarks, tutors can target specific standards and help close achievement gaps.
Tutoring rates vary based on the subject, tutor expertise, and your student's needs. We work with families across Portland to find tutoring solutions that fit their budget. When you connect with Varsity Tutors, we'll discuss your goals and help match you with a tutor whose rates align with your situation.
We consider your student's subject, grade level, learning style, and specific challenges to connect you with a tutor who's the right fit. Whether your student needs help with Oregon standards, test prep, or catching up in a particular subject, we focus on finding someone with relevant expertise and experience working with Portland-area students.
Progress shows up in multiple ways: improved grades, stronger performance on quizzes and tests, increased confidence in class participation, and better understanding of concepts. Your tutor will track your student's growth throughout your work together and communicate regularly about what's working. Many Portland parents also notice their students becoming more independent learners and more willing to tackle challenging material.
