Hello! My name is Sara, and I am a graduate of American University with a B.S in Biology. I will begin my program where I will receive my Masters in Medical Science at Boston University Medical School in the fall. I am originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where I began tutoring lower and middle schoolers in English, Maths and Science, and organizational and study techniques. In college, I worked as a supplemental instructor (SI). I held weekly review sessions outside of class and helped students prepare for tests, quizzes, labs, and pending homework assignments. I also worked with students in the local high school and college to develop personal statement ideas, how to write personal statements, and edit them.I love to use different strategies to help convey information and enjoy explaining topics in many different ways until something clicks. Working with students on educational topics is extremely important and crucial to understanding material. Still, I also think introducing new and upcoming study techniques can help make studying more fun and even easier to do! I believe learning should be engaging, fun and leave the student with new confidence in the material. I am excited and hope to show you when we work together how to bring joy to learning.

I am a neuroscience and psychology double major from CU Boulder working to go to PA school down the road. I am originally from the East coast, but definitely prefer the hiking here. I was a learning assistant (basically student focused teacher aid) at CU, and took a course to learn more effective pedagogy. Afterwards, I was asked to be a mentor, and continued trying to help as much as I can.

I believe that the confidence to apply your knowledge is as important as building a store of knowledge to draw from for academic success. As a teacher, I strive to accurately identify my students weaknesses and strengths before bolstering them with my own knowledge. I want my students to gain an understanding of the fundamentals of the subject that they are struggling with. This kind of understanding will help not only with immediate academic gains, but with future success as well. In school environments, students often do not receive individualized attention that seeks out the gaps in their understanding. By spending time with my student, I can assess those gaps and fill them, helping my students improve. All the knowledge in the world will amount to naught if you don't have the confidence to apply it. I build up my student's confidence, not with platitudes or empty praise, but by having them practice and learn to believe in themselves. Too often, people are derailed by factors that have nothing to do with their intelligence or their ability. I am well aware of that, and as a tutor, I consider it my job to give my students the confidence to apply the knowledge they have gained. That confidence will serve them well not only now but in future endeavors as well.

I am eager to help students learn in a style that is most intuitive for them. I believe that a problem or concept can always be simplified in a manner that is easy to learn, and I enjoy tailoring the simplification process to best fit the individual. As someone who has been tutored in the past I understand the challenges certain courses have and want to pay it forward by helping others master these courses. I received my B.A. in Human Biology with a concentration in Anthropology and am happy to help my students improve and ultimately succeed in the sciences. In my free time I love traveling, practicing yoga, and attending live music events.

CDL - Commercial Driver's License Tutor • +3 Subjects
I have held a Commercial Drivers License since 1997 and have been employed in the commercial truck driving industry for the past 25 years. I have at on time or another held every endorsement except doubles or passenger. I have managed to do this while remaining accident free and maintaining a clear driving record, while also working across many of the various industry platforms. So I feel I may have invaluable real world experience and knowledge to pass along, and I would love to share that knowledge with you as someone seeking to attain a commercial drivers license, or someone just new to the industry looking for a few pointers from an old hand who's been around and seen it all proverbially. I also happen to be a self taught guitarist with 30 years of playing and believe I could share that knowledge and teach or give tips for playing guitar if that interest you as well. Thanks for taking the time to read my profile and I look forward to working with you as your tutor.

I recently graduated Magna Cum Laude from Bryn Mawr College with my BA in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and with a minor in Health Studies. I hope to attain my Master's in Anesthesiology Assisting and pursue a career in healthcare. I've tutored high school and middle school students in various subjects while in high school through both the National Honor Society and National Science Honor Society programs. While in college, I was a Chemistry peer mentor and helped many students throughout their courses in that department. I've also worked as a tutor for Chegg for about 4 years and have worked with over 1000 students, garnering over 300 positive reviews during my time there. My tutoring style is very patient and affirming. I know that students can be afraid to say their answers sometimes because they are afraid to be wrong but I encourage this! It's the only way to learn and it helps build their confidence.

As I lay on a large rock across from delicate arch with seventeen other high school students, I contemplated the rest of my life. On that night, I decided that I wanted to study the earth and discover its history. During sophomore year of high school, I was presented with an opportunity to take a three-week summer earth science class, called Summer Earth Studies, which would survey the western U.S. using the earth as its textbook. That trip changed my life, as I realized that I wanted to study the earth and use inquiry-based learning methods to help every student learn. For the last two years, I have been teaching middle school science at Brandon Hall School in Sandy Springs. This has been a wonderful experience allowing me to challenge myself in many ways including interpersonally, curriculum and educational design, time management, and leadership. Brandon Hall is an international and local school with both day and boarding students allowing the faculty and students to interact with a wealth of diverse individuals on a daily basis. As a result of this working and living environment, I have learned how to talk to people from many walks of life from different cultures, backgrounds, ages, and influence. Teaching middle school has been a gigantic challenge calling on my problem solving skills and ingenuity every day to plan and execute lessons, deal with problems as they arise during these lessons, maintain decorum and a positive attitude during difficult days and with challenging students, and then reflect on the process and assess what succeeded and what needs to be changed during the next day, week, or month to allow both my students and I to succeed. This experience has prepared me to take on the next challenge with the skills to help any student succeed.

Frequently Asked Questions
First grade science introduces students to foundational concepts across life, earth, and physical science. Common topics include living things and their habitats, seasons and weather patterns, basic properties of materials, simple machines, the five senses, and how plants and animals grow and change. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on exploration and observation skills rather than memorization, helping students develop curiosity about the natural world.
Science tutors break down abstract concepts into concrete, observable experiences. For example, instead of just reading about how plants grow, a tutor might help your child plant seeds and observe changes over time, connecting theory to real-world outcomes. Tutors also teach the scientific method—asking questions, making predictions, and testing ideas—which builds both understanding and critical thinking skills. This approach helps students move beyond memorization to truly grasp why things happen in nature.
Great first grade science tutors are patient, curious, and skilled at making learning interactive and fun. They should understand how young learners think, use age-appropriate experiments and activities, and ask open-ended questions that encourage exploration. Look for tutors who can explain concepts simply, connect lessons to things your child sees every day, and adapt their teaching style based on your child's interests—whether that's animals, weather, plants, or how things work.
Personalized science instruction means your child learns at their own pace with a tutor who can pause on confusing ideas, repeat explanations in different ways, and choose examples that match their interests. Unlike classroom settings where teachers manage many students, one-on-one tutoring allows for immediate feedback and hands-on experiments tailored to your child's learning style. This focused attention helps build confidence and a genuine curiosity about science rather than anxiety about getting the right answer.
First graders often struggle with understanding cause and effect (why does this happen?), observing carefully, and using scientific vocabulary to describe what they see. Some students also find it hard to sit still during experiments or to predict outcomes before trying something. A tutor can help by breaking these skills into smaller steps, providing plenty of opportunities to practice observing and predicting, and making experiments engaging so your child stays focused and excited about learning.
Tutors choose simple, safe experiments that produce clear, immediate results—like observing how water changes states, watching seeds sprout, or testing which materials sink or float. They guide students through each step slowly, ask questions to help them notice patterns, and encourage predictions before revealing outcomes. This hands-on approach makes abstract concepts concrete and memorable, and helps students feel like real scientists rather than passive observers.
Simple activities make great science learning: observe bugs in the garden, watch clouds change shape, plant seeds indoors, compare how different objects float or sink, or notice how shadows change throughout the day. Ask your child "why" and "what if" questions to encourage curiosity, and let them lead exploration. A tutor can suggest specific experiments and activities tailored to your child's interests and help them develop the observation and questioning skills that make home learning more meaningful.
