From my experience with immigrant students I know that difficulties with Algebra are caused by a weak foundation in Arithmetic; specifically, fractions and division. And difficulties with fractions and division are rooted in weak multiplication skills. A student that makes a 100 on the Khan Academy 4th Level End of Course will cruise to a B in Algebra because they can SEE the values changing in a function without constantly referring to the calculator. To take my own advice, I started in K (Khan Academy) and have worked thru 77% of Algebra 2 with incidental work in Trig, etc. in 3 years; this was done with breaks as long as 6 months between sessions and progress really slowed down during Algebra 2. I wasn't obsessed with the project but I did work all the problems. It was humbling to see how awful my test taking skill had become but I learned the connections between Arithmetic and higher math content. For study habits, I refer students to What Smart Students Know. I have a 1-page synopsis that I send to all my students. For Reading/English work, I use the First and Last technique and Teach to Learn regimen.I only work with people who want to actually learn (for whatever reason). I'm not going to do your homework for you.

I received my BA from Wesleyan University in 2020 with Honors in Philosophy and Phi Beta Kappa. I spent one year abroad studying Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Oxford University. Having met stages one and two of Wesleyan's general education requirements, I have excelled in humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences so am able to provide assistance in a wide variety of subjects.Having peer-reviewed many papers in university, I am especially adept at workshopping essays in various departments (including philosophy, literature, psychology, history, and sociology). I also have experience tutoring high school math (geometry, algebra, pre-calculus) and am willing to tutor younger students as well.I am highly adaptable to the needs of the student and am quite good at adapting my style and vocabulary to who I am interacting with. Ultimately, my goal is to have the student be able to teach the material to me in a cogent manner. I accomplish this in part by asking the right questions rather than simply giving answers. I have experience working with non-native English speakers so have grown accustomed to speaking in ways that others can understand.Outside of academia I enjoy reading books, watching films, singing, playing the piano and guitar, getting exercise, and going to Maine. My passions are acting and Russian literature.

I am a recent graduate of Swarthmore College where I received my B.A. in physics. I had minors in mathematics and philosophy, and chose to pursue the honors program at Swarthmore, graduating with High Honors. I have experience tutoring students in high school, community college, and students attending Swarthmore. I most enjoy tutoring math and physics, since these are the subjects I love studying most on my own time. Explaining abstract ideas as a TA, as a volunteer in local schools, and as a frequent contributor to the student science magazine were some of my most rewarding experiences in college. Outside of academia, I love the outdoors, especially camping and back backing. After graduating from Swarthmore I worked as a caretaker on the Appalachian Trail for four months, and am now settling down to tutor full-time until hiking season comes back into full swing. Next fall I hope to start my PhD in physics, with the ambition of one day becoming a professor at a university. Coming from an academic career track, I am very familiar with the frustrations of standardized testing, and am well-prepared to help others navigate the test preparation process.

AANP - American Association of Nurse Practitioners Tutor • +10 Subjects
I am a graduate of St. Xavier University with my Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and my Masters of Science degree in Nursing with a concentration in Family Nurse Practitioner. I enjoy tutoring students who are preparing to sit for the NCLEX exam and the professional Nurse Practitioner certification exam as I remember what it felt like to anxiously study and sometimes question if I was in fact studying the "right" material. I also have a passion for tutoring students who need assistance with essay writing. I am a descriptive writer and use a lot of adjectives to color my essays. I assist students with understanding English concepts by first determining what they know and then bridging the gap to where they should be. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, traveling, walking and watching Disney movies. When volleyball is in season, you can catch me at one of my daughter's games cheering her and her teammates on.

I grew up in a military family that was forced to relocate every few years, often internationally. As the result I became fluent in Russian, English, Spanish and proficient in French before I turned 18. As a freshman in college (2009), while studying International Studies, one of my classmates asked if I would help her prepare for the test in Advanced Placement Spanish and Literature. I agreed to help and therefore held my first tutoring session, and she ended up acing the test. This is when I found out I had a knack for teaching. My classmate was so happy with her results that she told her friends about it. Word of mouth got around, resulting in more and more students approaching me for help in foreign languages and social sciences, which started my career as a tutor. I began tutoring students in subjects like Spanish, Russian, ESL, as well as Psychology, Political Science, Criminal Justice and International Relations and undergraduate level Criminal law. Because I have been a student myself; I like to believe that I have an easy time relating to my clients and recognizing their educational needs. I find it extremely important that my students have fun during lessons, therefore I try to cater my lesson plans according to each student's individual learning style. I have a great deal of passion for education and the times when I notice results in my students, it makes my job as an educator that much more meaningful and fulfilling. I sincerely love what I do for a living, and I use my life and tutoring experiences to improve as a person and as an educator. I feel honored to be a part of Varsity Tutors, helping students achieve their educational and personal goals in life, therefore at the end of the day i go to bed knowing that i have done something meaningful and positive that day, that I have helped another person get ahead, and to me that feeling is priceless.

Frequently Asked Questions
First graders often find it challenging to move beyond simple observation and start thinking like scientists. Common struggle areas include understanding life cycles (why plants and animals change over time), grasping basic physical properties (why objects sink or float, how magnets work), and connecting cause-and-effect in nature (how weather affects what we see outside). Many students also struggle with the vocabulary needed to describe what they observe—words like "absorb," "dissolve," and "predict" are new and abstract. A tutor can break these concepts into concrete, hands-on experiences that make the "why" behind each topic click.
Scientific thinking at this age is about learning to observe carefully, ask questions, and make predictions before testing them out. Tutors help students move past just looking at something to actually describing what they notice in detail—the color, texture, size, and behavior. Through guided experiments (like testing which objects float, observing how seeds sprout, or exploring how light and shadows work), students learn the scientific method in age-appropriate ways. This foundation builds confidence and curiosity, making students more engaged learners who understand that science is about discovery, not just memorizing facts.
First graders are concrete thinkers, so tutors use hands-on materials and real-world examples to make abstract ideas tangible. For example, instead of just talking about "habitats," a tutor might have a student sort pictures of animals by where they live, then create a simple habitat diorama. For concepts like weather or the water cycle, tutors use demonstrations (like evaporating water in a cup or showing how clouds form) that students can see and touch. This multisensory approach helps bridge the gap between what's happening in nature and the vocabulary and concepts students need to understand it.
An effective 1st Grade Science tutor combines subject knowledge with the ability to make learning playful and exploratory. They should be skilled at asking open-ended questions that encourage observation ("What do you notice? Why do you think that happened?") rather than giving answers away. Patience with repetition is essential, as is the ability to recognize when a student needs a different explanation or approach. Strong tutors also manage the energy and enthusiasm of young learners—they know how to keep experiments and activities engaging while still building real understanding of scientific concepts and processes.
Hands-on experiments are central to effective 1st Grade Science tutoring because young students learn best through direct experience. Tutors typically incorporate simple, safe experiments into most sessions—things like testing sink-or-float with different objects, growing seeds to observe plant growth, exploring magnets, or making predictions about what happens when you mix colors or materials. These aren't elaborate lab setups; they're accessible activities using household items that help students see science concepts in action. This approach transforms abstract ideas into concrete experiences students can remember and build on.
Falling behind in 1st Grade Science often means a student hasn't yet built confidence with observation skills or science vocabulary, or they're struggling to connect what they see to the concepts being taught. A tutor slows down the pace and focuses on building one concept at a time with lots of concrete examples and repetition. They also identify whether the challenge is understanding the concept itself, remembering vocabulary, or participating in class discussions—then tailor their approach accordingly. With personalized 1-on-1 instruction, students get the extra practice and encouragement they need to catch up and feel successful in science.
Science vocabulary is the language students need to think and communicate about what they observe. In 1st Grade, new words like "predict," "observe," "living," "nonliving," "habitat," and "weather" are foundational to understanding science concepts. Without these words, students struggle to follow lessons, answer questions, and explain their thinking. Tutors help by introducing vocabulary in context through real experiences—a student learns "absorb" by actually watching a sponge soak up water, not from a definition. This approach makes vocabulary stick and gives students the tools to express their scientific thinking.
Many 1st graders feel anxious about "getting it wrong" in science, especially if they've struggled with observation tasks or felt confused by new vocabulary. Personalized tutoring creates a safe space where students can ask questions, make mistakes, and try again without pressure. A tutor celebrates curiosity and effort, helping students see that science is about exploring and learning, not performing perfectly. As students experience success with small, achievable experiments and activities—and see their own observations matter—their confidence grows. This positive foundation makes them more willing to participate in class and more excited about science.
