Today the student and I worked on Study Island. We completed the pre-test and then worked on individual areas. It was a great success. The student was very engaged and I think she increased her confidence. She scored well on all the areas we worked on. I suggested to the student that she continue to review for the exam using Study Island.

The student had completed parts of another test, and we went over that as well as a few topics from the Saturday ACT. She's improving every time (36 on English!) and it's mostly just a few stray issues here and there. I think she's pretty set for math and English, so we'll continue focusing mostly on reading and science from here on out.

The student and I covered basic verbal strategy as it was our first session together. We spoke about what schools she is looking at, her academic strengths and weaknesses, and what she wants to score on the SAT. We began with sentence completion strategy and then moved on to long passage strategy. She responded well to long passages, but will need to work extra hard on learning vocab.

Started by working through problems the student had missed on a College Board practice test. I also brought a couple challenge problems that combined several concepts previously discussed (working with 3D shapes effectively, ratios between variables, building formulas for new problems). We encountered a few difficult problems in our next practice set as well, most notably logic of constant-variable interaction and high-level inequality solving. Covered it a little but, next time we will focus on good work-checking strategies; a majority of her errors are not in understanding, but trivialities of execution.

The student and I went over ways to memorize new vocabulary, by considering them as word clusters with similar meanings and, by thinking about etymology and common prefixes/suffixes -- I sent him a PDF containing this information to review on his own. We reviewed reading comprehension passages 10 and 11 from the website we've been using, and I left passages 12 and 13 for him to practice with on his own time at his request. Finally, we spent time going over vocabulary and discussing the benefit of, really getting in a couple of good practices, where someone in his family times him the whole way through.
