How can a tutor help your child master the ASPIRE?

The PLAN test, or preliminary ACT, provides practice for the ACT. It is the ACT's equivalent to the SAT's PSAT and is administered during the sophomore year of high school. The PSAT, often known as the Pre-SAT, is similar in nature, but also qualifies students for National Merit Scholarships. Taking both the PLAN and PSAT is advisable -- and often required by high schools -- as it may help to determine whether your child is likely to perform better on the ACT or SAT. You can then use their scoring information to determine which test they should focus on when studying. The ACT organization views the PLAN as predictive of future performance on the ACT. It's often advised to focus on scoring well on this exam, as it is a good predictor of how competitive your student will be in terms of college admissions. Using a PLAN tutor in Chicago can help to substantially improve your child's score on and readiness for the ACT exam.

Highly credentialed PLAN tutors are dedicated to helping your child make consistent improvement before the test date. They will give assignments between sessions and provide tutoring for all four subject areas of the PLAN: English, Math, Reading, and Science. The instructors are experienced teachers and can provide subject area coaching, test-taking guidance, and mock tests. Consistent, helpful feedback and progress monitoring is given as well. The PLAN tutors in Chicago, IL, are available to help your child get ready to do their best. The tutors will thoroughly assess their current skill level, identify areas for improvement, and develop a plan to give them the best chance for a great PLAN score.

Session Summaries by ASPIRE Tutors

ASPIRE Tutoring review by Patricia in Chicago, IL
The student and I went over the math section of the ACT today. We had already reviewed the practice problems, so we began with the practice test. She finished about 2/3 of the test in our time. We talked about working efficiently, but not too quickly. The other problems she missed we went over and I wrote down the equations we used for her to review in her free time.

ASPIRE Tutoring review by Sarah in Chicago, IL
The student's weakest section is science, so we began today by going over that section. We talked about basic strategies and tips, such as not getting overwhelmed by scientific words, and then looked at the different types of passages and questions. Together, we went over examples of data representation, research summary, and conflicting viewpoints questions. He was able to get most of the questions for these, but had a little trouble with "use the chart" type questions. I had him do 2 passages by himself for practice, and he did very well on these, only missing 1 question. Then, we moved on to the reading section. Together, we discussed the prose fiction and social sciences passages, and looked at the different types of questions that can be asked. Next time, we will finish up the reading section with the humanities and natural science passages. I asked him to complete a practice science section for our next session.

ASPIRE Tutoring review by Naama in Chicago, IL
Today we finished up critical reading strategies, and then did a review with some sentence completions. Then we got started on the Math with a practice section to assess which areas needed refreshing, and I assigned him a section from the practice test for homework and asked him to time it and mark questions with conceptual problems.

ASPIRE Tutoring review by Christine in Chicago, IL
I covered basic test taking strategies for each section of the SAT and then the student did 2 practice sections. We went over the critical reading section and will pick back up on the math section during the next scheduled tutoring session. Her vocabulary is great but she seems to have trouble picking the best answer over a technically correct answer that isn't as "good" as the best answer. She just needs to practice and see more problems to get used to the curve balls SAT's throw. For homework, she should complete one whole SAT practice test before the next session, using correct timing (I gave her a piece of paper that has the correct break times). I think we will need to meet 3 times a week in order to see significant improvement by the test date. She also should purchase another SAT practice book that has the explanations to the answers instead of just the answers - this will greatly help her individual studying.

ASPIRE Tutoring review by Nicholas in Chicago, IL
Reviewed all previously studied techniques in preparation for the test. Most recent practice test was a 30. Went over the types of questions that she missed on the last practice test to see if there was a common motif. Overall a lot of improvement in all sections. No homework was given because of how close her test date is.

ASPIRE Tutoring review by Stephanie in Chicago, IL
The student and I went over some math questions that he did not understand from the SAT 2 Math book he is using to prepare. We talked about the change of base formula and did some practice with that concept. He asked me for help on the critical reading and writing sections of the SAT as well, so we went over two Writing multiple choice sections and one passage reading section together question by question. He said talking through the logic of how to attack each question was helpful. For homework, I asked him to do one practice test.
