Session Summaries by Test Prep Tutors

Test Prep Tutoring review by McKinley in Westchester, IL
The student covered initial test-prep strategies, critical reading skills for passage-based questions, and vocabulary strategies. She's a very bright student, and can focus on answering the questions the test is asking, rather than reading between the lines. Her homework is to study flash cards with her English teacher. She should complete at least one Practice Test by our next meeting on 2/19.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Ben in Westchester, IL
The student continues to show improvement on the practice tests. We focused our review sessions on his biggest weaknesses - punctuation errors. He does better when he is focused on particular kinds of errors, his difficulty is mostly on focusing enough to find different kinds of mistakes on the full subject tests. We also began to discuss the essay portion. We discussed tips for developing an essay, such as outlining a response, and focusing on supporting an answer with descriptive arguments and examples. The student should practice answering essay prompts with a timer, to get a feel for how much time should be spent on each step.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Matthew in Westchester, IL
For our final session before the student's test, we worked through some problem spots in her weakest sections. We began with English, where the student and I spent time discussing strategies to help her make better choices. For example, if one part of the answer is wrong, the whole thing is wrong. We then moved onto math where she completed a mini-portion of the hardest part of the test. She did very well. We finished her most improved section, reading. We discussed the ones she missed and figured out strategies for better success with specific question types. She also sent me a writing prompt which I read and sent notes back to her.
