The student got a B on her exam! That was great news. We started learning new material for her next exam. The class is covering biological diversity, so we discussed the differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. We discussed how organisms make/get food via autotrophy, heterotrophy, or mixotrophy. We talked about the three domains. Then, we learned about different prokaryotes, the large range of conditions they live in, their shapes, and how they may be beneficial or detrimental to human beings. Finally, we started discussing protists and their means of locomotion.

He was very enthusiastic to learn about the cell biology behind the reactions that take place, as he is about all of his experiments. Using the placement test biology book, began working through first chapter on biochemistry. Since the student has not yet taken Chemistry (which is a tenth grade course; she is in ninth grade), much of this lesson focused on introducing concepts of bonding and atomic theory necessary to build a strong foundation for biology concepts. Explained subatomic particles and why atoms interact the way they do to form molecules. Introduced the unique nature of water and why it is so important in biological systems. She is inquisitive and the lessons proceed quickly in an interactive yet challenging manner. Working together twice a week should be sufficient to develop a strong background for the exam.
