We decided to start our session on reading. The student admitted that he was intimidated by the passages. I've found that his comprehension requires some work. He can fall into the trap of reading the words but not reading for comprehension. I coached him in how to avoid using personal opinions, and rather to rely on the content of the text itself. Despite only partial comprehension from reading the passages, he does do a surprisingly good job at answering the questions. He is very reliant on trying to find literal citations in the text to support answers. While this sometimes works, I tried to warn him of times when it would fail. I assigned him to finish the reading section that we were working on.

The student has improved enormously, especially within the science section. She did a practice science section and only got 5 wrong. Most of the questions were from one passage that was hard to understand. The rest of the passages she aced. Next, she did a practice English section while underlining/circling. I did not need to remind her to keep circling. The circling helped because of the few mistakes she made, none of them were because she didn't read the question carefully. We ended the session by doing more practice math questions. Over the weekend, she will do another full practice test to see if there are any more techniques she needs to fix. If there aren't, all she needs to do it keep on practicing.

We reviewed critical reading and the essay. On the critical reading sections, he performed well in general. One of the two sections had a sentence completion section that challenged him more so than the other one had. On the reading comprehension portion of the sections, he only missed one question. I did observe, however, that he did not have an accurate understanding of the author's main idea and tone in Passage 1. As we went over the lines that indicated the author's position, he expressed disagreement with the interpretation of the passage, but I believe he came to understand it for what it was by the end of our discussion. The essay posed more of a challenge during our session. He did the essay during the latter half of our session, and the essay itself improved since our first session together. However, it still needs to show evidence of a more well developed argument and include a conclusive statement of some sort. I advised him that, once he chooses his test date, he should take many full-length diagnostic tests prior to the day of the test. He has admitted that a big factor will be mental endurance, and, again, like the essay, mental endurance can only be improved with practice and taking diagnostic exams to normalize the process. My final note regarding my sessions with him is that he is clearly a bright, gregarious student.
