In our lesson today, we went over the student's writing from last week's exercises in the book. Areas that he is still working on include prepositions and time-related words. I can already see an improvement in his writing, and he writes in a very clear and succinct manner. He is also able to express his ideas verbally if his sentences are structured a little differently, showing he has a good control over his ideas and what he is trying to say. After working on writing, we discussed an article on China in the business section of the newspaper. He was able to discuss the article with ease and its main points. The article discussion is also an opportunity for him to expand his vocabulary and ask about new words and phrases, and he is great at asking for clarification for things he is unfamiliar with.

Because it was a beginning session I wanted to cover the basics of Math and Reading to get a sense of what he knew. I had the student read a couple pages from 2 nonfiction short story books. He needs help with his short u sounds and being able to chunk words apart to help him recognize the sounds he says out loud. He is good at correcting himself but will often add sounds for when he is unsure of part of a word. He is good at recognizing beginning sounds in words and we will focus on chunking the ending and middle sounds in the future. I asked him when I left that he must read at least 5 pages to Whiskers of a book of his choice. I want him to read to someone who is nonjudgmental (no pressure) and gives him the time to work out the words for himself. For Math we worked on telling time. He remembers what the short hand stands for but struggles with understanding how the long hand works. He is able to count by 5's but needs help relating that to the minute hand. We also did math flashcards and he told me one of his strategies for adding - which is to start with the larger number and add that to the shorter. We will build on this as well. We also were able to do 1 of the 2 planned word problems. We worked on drawing and labeling what we hear for the word problems. Next week we will build on chunking words for reading, telling time, and I will want to see how well he does with subtraction. Overall he did a great job and I will be happy to work with him next week!

We went over writing done by another writer and collectively edited the paper. I assigned the student to re-write the paper and correct flaws in grammar/ structure for next time. I edited a new piece of writing that student did at home and assigned him to also rewrite that. We went over grammar including affect v. effect and how to use them in writing. The student is very much confident in writing but not in editing quite yet.

I met with the student and conducted an introductory inventory. We went over likes and dislikes and with what he is struggling. He does not have a lot of extra time for independent reading and many of the books he has selected do not catch or retain his interest. When he reads, he is basically just reading the words and not immersing himself in the text. I conducted a fluency check and he is reading at least a 950 Lexile, which is a high 7th grade or mid 8th grade level. He says, however, that he can read the books, but he often does not understand them. We set up a notebook for him and covered the grammatical rules of commas. Then we covered summarizing text with SWBST. He likes the tool and practiced summarizing The Giver utilizing it. Finally, I gave him some book suggestions that might engage his reading.
