Session Summaries by Elementary Math Tutors

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Rebecca in Los Angeles, CA
With the first student, we continued our work with place value through the hundred millions. We also covered reading, writing, knowing each place, and adding to big numbers. We used a place-value chart for adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers. We also worked on patterns and mental math. With the other student, we continued reading and writing numbers 11-20, counting, comparisons, and patterns.

Today we finished the student's math workbook. We also completed a writing assignment and worked on phonics. I am slowly getting her to be more confident in attempting to pronounce words. We also continued to practice writing. She says she's starting to enjoy writing a bit more, which I am glad to hear.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Kia in Los Angeles, CA
The student once again reviewed the parts of a story and applied them to a chapter book he just finished (characters, plot, setting). I had him write a summary of the book, and he struggled a little with sentence structure. I think focusing on sentence structure and paragraph structure will be one of the things we make a priority. The student is doing great in math. Today we completed worksheets on place value up to the thousands.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Sarah in Los Angeles, CA
The student and I looked at a math worksheet she was given that she didn't understand. We discussed the key terms that were confusing and walked through how to solve the second problem. We did not complete the entire problem together but she understood what she would need to do to solve it on her own. Afterwards we spent time reviewing addition facts. I had flash cards that we went through. At the end we talked about different strategies that can be used to solve a math problem that you don't know the answer to right away.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Audrey in Los Angeles, CA
Today we reviewed subtraction with regrouping with zeroes in the minuend. The student did well, completing 3 with no errors on his own. He completed 2 patterns of multiples of 6 and 7 and added them to his multiplication chart. We explored decimals today and the student practiced reading, writing and shading in tenths and some hundredths. I introduced him to a model of part to wholes for problem solving with addition and subtraction. He seemed to catch on quickly and could determine which was a "part" and which was the "whole". He also knew to add to find the whole and subtract to find the part. We will continue reviewing all of these skills.
