Hi! My name is Arianna Tabankin, and I am a pre-med senior at the University of Pennsylvania majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry and nutrition. I am graduating with honors (summa cum laude) and remaining at UPenn for a master's degree in public health. After two gap years I hope to continue on to med school. I have been a tutor for UPenn's Weingarten Academic Center for over three years and have hundreds of hours of experience tutoring biology. I also hold a mentorship position to help new tutors flourish in the program. I love to tailor tutoring sessions to best fit the needs of each individual student, whether that be more of a lecture format, doing practice problems, or creating a study plan together. I continued my education at Columbia University and received Master of Arts in Biology. Starting in middle school and continuing through my graduate career, I have tutored students in a wide variety of subjects, but I was most effective at tutoring math and science because of my lifelong love and aptitude for these subjects. Since I am also working towards a career in molecular biology, I use math and science every day, and I can explain real-world applications and uses for these subjects that may not seem obvious. By demonstrating the use of math and science in everyday life, I am able to help interact with the student and increase their interest in a subject in which they may experience difficulty. I also believe that as a tutor, it is my responsibility to engage with the student to help them achieve and even surpass their goals. In my spare time, I am heavily involved with music in New York City, being part of multiple choirs and continuing to play piano. I also enjoy exercising and exploring the city whenever I have the chance.

I enjoy helping students feel a sense of achievement that feeling that happens when, after struggling with and working through a challenging question together, the student "gets" it. Their eyes light up, they smile, laugh, put their arms up in a "v" and scream "yes!"... or simply says "yay" in subdued, Monty Python kind-of-way. I have an undergraduate degree in computer graphics and interactive media from Pratt Institute (2003) and a master degree in electronic art from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (2015). My favorite subjects to tutor are highschool math, C#, and python for data science. I find comfort in the structured logic of math and programming. It gives me the illusion that our existance can be understood and measured at times when nothing makese sense and the world feels like it's falling apart.

I'm prone to using odd analogies, clear explanations, and customized study strategies that meet students where they are. I have found great passion in teaching and mentoring students in physics and materials science, whether through informal educational training activities at the Discovery Space, assisting in laboratory classrooms for undergraduates, or helping students with difficult problem sets for thermodynamics or quantum mechanics. I've seen the best success when students can interact with a complicated concept in multiple ways and pull on their own experiences as metaphors to the system in question - after all, this is part of how science is actually done! I firmly believe that the vast majority of students who believe they are "bad at math" have tragically internalized this identity without true justification. I have personally seen students of mine shed that persona and it is a special thing to witness.
