I have 2 math degrees, 7 years of teaching experience and 30 years of tutoring experience in math. I enjoy what I do and I help students enjoy the learning process as well. I help them build their confidence through a series of successes in solving progressively more challenging problems. I look forward to helping students be the best math students they can be.

My name is Ava. I am from Phoenix, Arizona but currently live in New York as a student at Fordham University. I am a Philosophy major with a passion for learning and creativity. I have experience tutoring in pre-algebra, Latin, and SAT prep. I have taken the SAT three times, the PSAT three times, and three SAT subject tests. I am extremely familiar with the layout of the SAT and how to coach students in studying and test-taking techniques. I believe in setting a strong foundation of knowledge for students to build off of in every subject they approach. I look forward to helping students become the best they can be through engaging lessons made specifically for each individual.

I am a graduate of Mercy College and Fordham University. At Mercy College, I received my MS in Urban Education with a concentration in special education. As for my undergraduate studies, I received a BA in Political Science and Spanish Studies with a minor in Latin American Studies. My work experience includes over three years of teaching experience. During that time, I created lesson plans, assessed data, and planned out goals for my students. My expertise is in Spanish and Math, but I have taught ELA, social studies, and science. Moreover, one of my specialties is preparing students for the NYS exams including the REGENTS exams. The teaching philosophy I find most effective is to customize lessons based on the student's interests and learning style. In my spare time, I play tennis and volleyball.

I am a Senior at Fordham University, where I am double majoring in Humanitarian Studies and Communications and Culture. My academic undergrad research is focused on fan fiction and participatory culture. I have worked in communications with INEE, immigration casework at the Office of U.S. Senator Gillibrand, refugee resettlement with Catholic Charities, procurement with URENCO USA, and as a children's librarian assistant. This fall, I will be attending law school, with the intent of pursuing a career in immigration public policy after graduation.I believe that tutoring should be a form of empowerment for the student, giving them agency and a way to push their growing edge. Everyone has their own knowledge expertise, and tutoring is a platform for each party to learn from the other.

I am a current fourth year medical student at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Fordham University with a Bachelors of Science and double majored in Biology and History. I was born and raised in Queens and now I currently reside in Manhattan. My tutoring style is very much student-centric. I work with students to create their own personalized notes from the textbook in order to focus upon what is truly important. Then, I work with students to help them understand the central concepts. Once students understand the central concepts, the details easily follow. I also have my students work through as many problems as they can on their own. When a student has struggled through a problem and succeeds by themselves, they learn more than they possibly could through an explanation. I then work with my students on the problems they could not accomplish to show them how to best tackle it in the future. My tutoring strategy is to not only teach the subject material, but to also teach the student how to study effectively by themselves.

I'm a budding Physicist and I believe that a good understanding of the physical laws which govern our universe is not only key for a good outlook on life, but makes a number of things in life more enjoyable. About myself: I'm from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic originally and came to New York when I was three (I've been here 19 years - Go Yanks!). I play the guitar (I love the Blues) and am a baseball enthusiast. I am fluently bilingual (English and Spanish) and as such can teach what I know in both languages.I've recently received a degree in Physics (B.S) from Fordham U. in The Bronx. At Fordham, the Physics Department requires that all upperclassmen be available for tutoring in the classes they've succeeded in, meaning that I've tutored in several areas of Physics and Math for two consecutive years. I've also had the pleasure of tutoring my younger siblings in anything they need help with (I have a 9 yr. old sister who loves Science, and I believe I've played at least a small role in that). I love tutoring; many see tutoring as a service provided by one party to another, but it has great benefits for the tutor as well. Through tutoring at Fordham and unprofessionally (family and friends) I've learned how to communicate physical and mathematical theories at several levels of comprehension, and my understanding of the subject matter has often improved as a result. My general approach in tutoring physics and math is to emphasize the theory behind whatever subject the student may be dealing with. Once a student firmly understands a physical or mathematical theory it is much easier to understand the formulas and applications behind the theory. Examples are key in understanding this type of subject matter and as such I greatly emphasize examples as well. I am very patient when it comes to relaying the knowledge I have because I understand how difficult Math and Science may be for some (Science was not necessarily my strong suit in High School).

I am a graduate of Fordham University and Keuka College. I received my Bachelors Degree in Social work from Keuka College and My masters degree in social work from Fordham with a focus on Clinical Social work. Since graduation, I have been a therapist I spent a year and a half as a therapist embedded in the foster care program with a contracted agency. I currently am a therapist in a wellness center and work primarily with children and adolescence. I am a firm proponent of education, believing it to be absolutely necessary for an improved quality of life, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, being outdoors, and enjoying time with my family including my pets.

My favorite subject in school was and still is reading. I love studying various author crafts as well as comparing multiple works of literature. In my classroom I love bringing the excitement and joy of reading alive for my students. As a teacher with years of experience, I have encountered scholars with diverse reading levels and abilities. Although multiple strategies are used to reach each and every one of my students, one thing they all have in common is a shared love and appreciation for reading.While reading is my favorite, I have tutored students in phonics, writing, and elementary math. In each of these subjects, my goal and objective is for my scholars to become independent learners using the skills that I share with them.
