Academic success can be pervasive for a good deal of students today. The causes for these difficulties vary, but I believe they mostly arise from the fact that in classrooms, teachers teach in one set way for a large number of students. I currently work as a teaching assistant at Long Island University in Biological Sciences and Human Anatomy, which requires me to have "office hours" available in order to help students that are struggling. Tutoring students can be very simple and sometimes very complicated, but I always look for ways to make analogies to things students feel more comfortable with so it doesn't seem like I'm speaking a foreign language to them. I get a personal sense of satisfaction when someone stops and goes, "oh, I've never thought of it that way before - now it all makes sense." I first became interested in Chinese language, history, and culture when I watched Once Upon a Time in China starring Jet Li in high school. Although now I realize that the movie was in Cantonese, back then I was fascinated by the country and decided to start learning Mandarin in college.I have been studying Mandarin for 6 years. I received my BA in Asian Studies from the University at Buffalo in 2015. One year later, I obtained my graduate certificate from the Hopkins-Nanjing Center in China. In this program, I attended 7 classes on various academic subjects in which the language of instruction was Mandarin.While still a student of advanced Mandarin myself, I can tutor elementary and intermediate Mandarin, particularly with simplified characters. In my spare time, I write articles on developments in Chinese and Nepali relations on LinkedIn in both Chinese and English.Because Mandarin is one of the most difficult languages in the world, I take an engaging yet relevant approach to teaching. Unlike most schools, the admission process to Deep Springs involves writing - and later defending before a panel of staff, faculty and students - seven essays on a variety of subjects including literature, philosophy, and education. Once admitted to Deep Springs, students are typically required to read upwards of 100 pages per day from authors such as Hegel, Joyce, and Thucydides; and to write several essays per week, which are peer-critiqued in seminar classes. I am a Ph.D. student at the University at Buffalo, studying English literature. My research is in nineteenth and twentieth-century, American literature, and my teaching experience is mostly in English composition and writing, in particular essay writing, making arguments, conducting humanities research, as well as providing solid instruction in writing mechanics and grammar.
