Hi there! My name is Joelle Santiago. I am an accomplished academic, artist, and ardent learner. I hold a B.A. from Barnard College of Columbia University, Cum Laude. I have extensive experience in advanced literary analysis, writing and critical social theory. My writing has been praised by field leaders as "immensely curious", and "brilliant".I love learning from and laughing with the students that I work with. It continues to be a tremendous pleasure to witness and partake in the discovery-making of others. During the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic I launched (and taught within) a volunteer tutoring system to assist NYC school families struggling to adjust to the crisis. I also regularly teach dance to ages K-12. My teaching philosophy centers respect for her students, goal setting, and unites fun and rigor. I am excited to help K-undergraduate students develop their writing, reading, and critical thinking skills.

I have been tutoring students for 6 years, and I have enjoyed each moment of it! It's truly fulfilling when you see your students understand a certain subject and I hope to be a part of their academic achievements. I am an experienced tutor in math and science subjects, and I hope to share my passion for the STEM fields with someone else. As a computer science and operations research major, I hope to be able to show the real life applications of math and science problems through tutoring.
I am a current sophomore at Barnard College studying Biochemistry with a minor in Dance. I have previous tutoring experience in AP Chemistry and Organic Chemistry, for both high school and college age students. My personal teaching philosophy is to lead my sessions with a student-based approach. As a current student myself, I understand the frustrations that we can encounter when working to learn a new subject, and I am committed to working with students to help them learn in the best way for them. Outside of school, I am on the dance team, I pursue neural engineering research, and I am the Assistant VP of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in my sorority.
I am a graduate of The Hotchkiss School, a college preparatory boarding school in Connecticut and a current student at Barnard College, majoring in Economics and minoring in Environmental Science. I am passionate about working with Elementary and Middle School students and particularly enjoy tutoring Math and Spanish. I believe in the importance of tailoring tutoring styles to fit the needs and learning styles of my students.
I grew up in Virginia, where I completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma program in 2009. In 2013, I graduated from Barnard College with a degree in Political Science and Human Rights Studies. During college, I worked for the Junior Statesmen Summer School at Stanford University, where I helped students studying government, debate, international relations, and other topics. As a tutor, I believe there are no stupid questions, and that with enough hard work any student can succeed. In my free time, I'm an amateur photographer and an alumnae admissions interviewer for Barnard.
I received my undergraduate degree in English and creative writing from Barnard College, Columbia University, where I graduated with honors. I am currently working toward my Masters of Science in Education at Bank Street College of Education, where I am a student in the Reading & Literacy program. Currently, I am an elementary and middle school teacher in New York City. I have experience working with diverse student populations and believe that all students can become lifelong learners regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. As a former fifth grade teacher and current fourth grade teacher, I have experience teaching math, writing, reading, science, and social studies. My teaching and management style depends upon a unique blend of developmentally appropriate expectations, inquiry-based instruction, and humor. I believe that a student's social-emotional education is as important as any academic subject, and I customize lessons to appeal to each student's interests.
I am a graduate student living in New York and have been tutoring and teaching test prep classes for the past several years. I love working with students to help them gain confidence and understanding in subjects that have been giving them trouble, and I strive to make learning the most positive and enjoyable experience possible!
I believe the key to education is to promote the underlying understanding of the concepts. Once a topic is understood, the application of the numbers comes easily. People don't really hate math; they hate feeling uncomfortable with it.
Because of my passions for helping others and sharing my knowledge, I've gravitated toward tutoring since my early high school years. I'm now in my last year of college-- I study environmental science and art history at Barnard College of Columbia University in New York City-- and I'm happy that I've been able to continue to tutor a wide range of ages in a wide variety of subjects throughout college. My passion for languages shapes my preferred tutoring realm; I especially enjoy teaching others the languages I am familiar with and fluent in, which include English, German, Italian, and Spanish. I also enjoy assisting in science-related fields, mostly for school-aged children and teens. Lastly, in my fifteen years of violin-playing, I have been part of a number of ensembles, including the Columbia University Orchestra, and have taught violin to elementary and middle school students.
My background is in teaching composition, creative writing and analytical writing to college students. I have a PhD in Comparative Literature and I've published essays, stories, and plays. I taught at the University of Notre Dame for nine years. I am happy to be tutoring now because it gives me the opportunity to have an impact on students' lives from an early age.
I am a third year PhD candidate in History at Stony Brook University. I have experience teaching and tutoring students in high school and college as well as babysitting and teaching younger students. I have also taught adult GED students. I studied American Studies at Barnard College for undergrad. I have taken AP classes in Biology, Calculus, American History, World History, and English. I also achieved a NY Regents diploma in high school.I am passionate about educating and am interested in teaching in creative and individual ways that are conducive to each student.
As recent graduate of Barnard College, Columbia University, with a BA in Physiological & Organismal Biology, I am always eager to teach and mentor others, and to share my love for lifelong learning.I have worked as a teaching assistant for several college-level biology labs (including Physiology, Ecology, and Cellular & Molecular Biology) and worked as an undergraduate research assistant in a Neuroscience & Behavior lab. As an active emergency medical technician and certified instructor, I have also spent significant time training EMT students and active EMTs in New York. I love working with students of all ages, and have tutored middle school students as well.I'd be happy to help with any of your educational needs, to identify study & learning techniques that work best for you, and to help you achieve your goals! I believe the tutor and student are partners, and that this collaboration, with a continuous and honest dialogue, can surely lead to success.I have a strong background in Biology and EMT licensure training (NREMT, CT or NY), and am also glad to assist with several other topics including, and not limited to, ACT/SAT test prep, writing, middle school coursework, and Anatomy & Physiology.
I have a BA in Anthropology from Barnard College and a MS in Epidemiology from the University of Massachusetts, and I am currently doing cancer research at the Mount Sinai Medical Center. As a student I was never been able to decide on a favorite subject because I felt anything I studied in school could be fun and much easier if approached with the right attitude. Instead of boring memorization, I like to look for patterns and think of creative approaches to study subjects that can otherwise be very frustrating. My goal as a tutor is to help students gain confidence and to think of creative approaches to subjects (or standardized tests) that they struggled with in the past.
I am a lifelong educator and writer, passionate about creating engaging lessons that are tailored for each of my students. As both a classroom teacher and a tutor, I have gained invaluable experience about how to help students, all the while learning so much about life from my students themselves. Besides tutoring, I make my living writing content professionally for several ed tech companies.Outside of work, I love to hike and play with my dog. I am a huge traveler and am very thankful to have a career that allows me to be flexible in my location.
I graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Barnard College of Columbia University where I majored in Dramatic Arts and Literature. I also studied American History, Calculus, and Astronomy extensively. My areas of tutoring expertise include SAT test prep in all three sections (math, writing, and critical reading), PSAT test prep, US History, high school Algebra, Public Speaking, and Essay Writing. I particularly enjoy helping students hone their writing skills, guiding them to uncover a more personalized style within a cohesive and effective structure. Hello, my name is Rebecca Holt. I recently graduated from Columbia University and majored in Neuroscience. I have a passion for teaching, and I currently teach in Charlotte for Teach for America. I have been tutoring calculus, algebra, and SAT math for the past 2 years at University, and also work at an after-school program helping high school students complete their science and math homework. I love creating lesson plans and finding new ways to engage with the students and convey the information so it is understandable. I have taken all of the required pre-med courses-from Biology to physics to organic chemistry, and have taken a few math courses for fun! I especially love statistics and calculus.I have a passion for math, and have experience both taking, teaching, and tutoring high school and college mathematics. I am highly experienced in Algebra 1 and 2, Pre-calculus, Calculus, AP/BC calculus, statistics, and economics. I have a PhD in Psychological and Brain Sciences from Johns Hopkins University and a BA in Psychology with a minor in History from Barnard College. I have experience teaching and tutoring undergraduate students and have volunteered as a high school math tutor. I have a strong interest in most academic subjects but I particularly enjoy tutoring math. I've made extensive use of statistics as part of my research on vision and attention so I'm in a good position to talk about how certain concepts are used in the real world. I'm also a huge bookworm and offer SAT Critical Reading prep as well as general tutoring for writing. My hobby is creative writing and I'm currently writing up parts of my dissertation for publication, so I can help with writing from literary analysis to history research papers to the writing aspect of lab reports. When I'm not reading or writing, I'm playing the hammered dulcimer and teaching myself to code in new languages. When a student is struggling I'm always on the lookout for issues that don't have to do with the specific subject matter, such as test anxiety, a lack of organization, of a belief that the subject matter will not be useful later in life. When it comes to the actual material, I believe that there is almost always more than one way to approach a problem and that students should figure out what works best for them. I've studied learning and memory extensively, so I'm always ready to offer up advice. Not everyone learns the same way, and that's fine! While it's ideal for students to gain a deep understanding of the material, when it comes to standardized and multiple choice tests, test-taking strategies make a huge difference. I've used these strategies very successfully in the past.
I have a B.A. from Columbia University, and an M.A. from Stanford University. I have years of experience both at the high school and collegiate level in tutoring reading and writing. I am passionate about children's education and excited to help students learn!
I am an elementary school teacher and reading specialist who loves helping my students find joy and empowerment through reading. Reading is the key to unlocking knowledge across subjects, including math and science, which I also have experience in and enjoy teaching.

I absolutely loved working with my students in the classroom! As a teacher, I feel that a strong rapport with a student is essential to quality learning. I believe that a thorough education is a basic human right. In my spare time, I love to read (poetry, fiction, essays), write, explore new places, and cook new recipes.
I am a current Masters Candidate at Columbia University, Teachers College in Communication Sciences and Disorders. I have been tutoring math, English, test prep, and foreign languages for over ten years.I graduated with honors from Barnard College with a degree in Political Economy. During college, I also studied Spanish literature, Hindi, and Urdu, and received the prestigious Department of State Critical Language Scholarship for Urdu study in Lucknow, India. During that time, I taught SAT critical reading and writing at East Harlem Tutorial, raising average scores by over 200 points for her students. I was then hired by the Spanish government to teach English language through content classes in trilingual Catalan focused elementary and high schools. While in Spain, I also developed and taught curriculum for private children and adult classes. I then became head soft-skills trainer and curriculum developer for Anudip Foundation in Calcutta, a non-government organization aimed at teaching technology and language skills to rural Bengalis. I have been tutoring pre-numeracy through Algebra in New York for the last year, while studying communication sciences and disorder.I believe is giving students the tools to find answers to problems independently, and making the underlying logic of the problem clear. Watching students gain understanding of new concepts and break down barriers in the academic careers is the true joy I find in teaching.
I received my BA in English from Barnard College, Columbia University, where I graduated summa cum laude in 2011. I'm currently a PhD Candidate and Instructor in the English Department at Stony Brook University.Over the past eight years, I've worked with a wide range of students, ages elementary through college as both a tutor and classroom instructor. I teach college literature classes during the year and work in a pre-college program at Columbia teaching research, writing and public speaking to high school students every summer. I love discussing literature and writing with my students and enjoy working to improve their skills in these areas.
I always loved learning and excelled in school but only when I became a teaching assistant in college did I realize how much teaching is something I am great at and passionate about.I love to see my students excel and will work with them until they feel confident with their mastery of the material whether for a class or standardized test. I know that each student needs something different depending on their grade level, learning style, background, and academic goals and I tailor my teaching style to my students. My main goal when I tutor is to have my student leave the session knowing that they learned a ton and that their grades will show it!At the same time, my passion for the subjects I teach is contagious and I love to see my students get excited about a subject they previously thought was too challenging, dry, or boring. I like to make the material come alive. For example, when I teach biology, I love to interweave real life examples of how a scientific principle can be seen in nature or in our bodies.I graduated from Barnard College, Columbia University majoring in Linguistics but then did a post-bac for Pre-Med at Harvard and next year I will be going to medical school. My dual background in the humanities and sciences has given me knowledge in a wide range of subjects. I have experience tutoring anything from elementary school Math to High School English Literature to college level biology. I work with my students on what they are learning using the materials and the style your professor/ teacher prefers because I want my students to ace their tests and assignments!I took the MCAT exam for medical school, scoring in the 96th percentile and the 100th percentile (perfect score) in the psychology and sociology section of the exam. Since taking the exam, I have tutored for the exam and am eager to share everything I have learned in how I brought my score up. I know which subjects are 'high yield' and which can be brushed over. I have a very good sense of how to help my students structure their studying and I will work with them as much as they need to devise a plan as well as tutor them in subject-specific materials. I fought with the beast that is the MCAT and I want my students to crush it too!
I am a recent graduate of Saint Louis University School of Medicine who matched into Dermatology for my advanced training. I graduated as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and received a Distinction in Research award upon completing my training. I scored 253 on the USMLE STEP 1 exam and 258 on the USMLE STEP 2 CK exam. Not only do I have an extensive tutoring and mentoring background, but I have also worked with admissions counselors and tutors throughout my medical school career. With these past experiences, I understand how important it is for a student to have solid academic mentorship and support to succeed in their journey towards becoming a Doctor of Medicine. I also have three years of experience as a trained writing tutor, working as a Head Writing Fellow at the Barnard College Writing Center. I co-founded the Science Fellows Program to help science majors and pre-med students transfer writing skills from the humanities to the sciences. I believe I can help you succeed on your board exams and admissions essays. As someone who is working towards a career in academic medicine, I have always been a teacher and mentor. I love helping people learn. To the greatest extent possible, I customize my teaching strategy to each individual learner and his or her particular goals. Creative writing and English classes have helped me to connect with other authors and texts, and learning different languages allows me to do the same with different cultures. I have spoken French for 8 years, German for 4, and began to learn Spanish this past year. Tutoring is a very collaborative process for me, as the student cannot learn if they don't feel comfortable engaging with the materialI strive to make sure that sessions feel laidback and easy-to-follow as we work through any challenges.
My journey through science and teaching has ignited my passion for tutoring math and science. With a B.A. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from Barnard and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences underway at Rutgers, I've developed a strong grasp of these subjects. Tutoring students in Algebra through Calculus III at Columbia University and leading SAT math classes for students from low-income backgrounds showed me how impactful good instruction can be. It was amazing to see students grasp tricky concepts and gain confidence in their abilities. I'm passionate about math and science because I believe they're essential for academic and personal growth. My experiences have taught me that with the right support, students can not only understand these subjects but also truly enjoy them. I'm excited to continue tutoring and helping others discover the same passion for math and science that drives me.
I am a sophomore at Barnard College of Columbia University majoring in History with a minor in Spanish. I am a rising senior at Barnard College of Columbia University, studying both Music, and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. During my time at Barnard, I have been giving private voice lessons and private music lessons (basic music theory and ear training) to students between the ages of 8-18. In high school, I peer-tutored students in Algebra I, Pre-Algebra, History, and essay-writing, my teaching/tutoring; my experiences are both versatile and extensive. Though I have experience teaching a wide range of subjects, I thoroughly enjoy tutoring students in math. In my experiences with students who struggle with math, I aim to help them understand and solve problem sets through fun step-by-step processes. As someone who grew up with a learning disability, I value patience, unique learning styles, and encouragement. Math can be challenging, but once I show students different ways to approach their problem sets, I see outstanding results. It is always wonderful to see students come to actually like math! Outside of school, I am a competitive classical singer; I have performed all over the world, from Carnegie Hall to cathedrals in Italy. Most recently, I placed first in my age division for the Bellagrande Music Competition. Being that said, I am well-versed in both music theory and ear training, and have experience teaching both subjects. I love performing, but I also love teaching the art of music and voice. Getting to witness my students' vocal and musical growth is incredibly rewarding. Above all, I want my students to succeed, progress, and find enjoyment in the work we do together.
