I am a graduate of St. John’s University. I received my bachelors in science with a major in Biology. Since graduation, I worked with a tutoring center providing one-on-one tutoring and on site classroom tutoring to students ranging from 1st grade to high school. The lessons were customized for each student to enhance their understanding of the material from their existing knowledge and also to track their progress. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about anatomy and biological sciences. Due to my interest in these subjects and patient care, I am pursuing a Physician Assistant degree. As a first generation student, my parents instilled in me the value of being educated. Education is the foundation that builds a person and shapes their quality of life. Tutoring is a rewarding experience for me, in which I can provide the knowledge I have gained from my educational background and help students enhance their understanding of the material so that they may excel. In my spare time, I enjoy exercising, bicycling, cooking, playing badminton and volleyball.

Most of my career I have been a Reading Specialist where I have worked with students in grades K-6. I graduated from St. John's University twice with degrees in Journalism and Elementary Education. I've been teaching a long time for many grades and in many subjects. I've come to love teaching math. I always let my students use colored pencils and crayons to make the complicated topics easier to grasp. I taught remedial remedial high school math from 2008-2023. I loved it when they told me they already knew the topic. But when I showed them a different way to solve the problem, they would say, "This is so much easier than the way we learned it." I always say, "There's more than one way to paint a barn red.
Greetings my fellow students, I am Mr. Mateo and I have worked with inner city elementary and middle school students professionally for 9 years and I graduated with my Masters of Science in Education from Lehman College and I have my Bachelors Degree in History From St. John's University. I have worked diligently with students and staff alike inside and outside of the school setting. For my skills, I can say that I am bilingual and fluent in both English and Spanish, build social and emotional learning among students of color and whom need emotional support. Thus, I have worked with students who were English Language Learners and of whom had disabilities, in which I had to modify and make accommodations to the curriculum to meet their learning, social, and emotional needs inside and outside of the classroom. Furthermore, these experiences, in essence, will allow me to differentiate instruction and to break down today's learning curriculum standards and content that will match their interests, learning, emotional, and social needs. In turn, I believe that these attributes can bring forth a connection and growth with the students that I wish to work, mentor, and teach here at Varsity Tutors!
I am an accounting tutor with both Masters and Bachelors degrees; I have passed all four parts of the CPA exam.
I am a PharmD (Doctorate of Pharmacy) candidate at St. Johns University located in Queens, NY. As a future pharmacist, my goal is to make sure every patient knows what medication they are taking and what effects it would have upon them. Before they leave my pharmacy, I would ensure that every pertinent detail about the drug is clearly understood by my patients. In many cases, there is a gap between the patient’s and the pharmacist’s knowledge, because the patient isn’t familiar with sophisticated medical terminology. This is where, I, as the pharmacist, come in by translating complicated terminology into simple language that’s easy for the patient to understand. I have been tutoring ever since I was in the 5th grade, and it has become a major part of my life because I enjoy helping others understand difficult concepts. I think tutoring goes far beyond simply teaching someone how to solve a question; it is built upon a relationship of trust that over time blossoms into a special connection between student and tutor. As a tutor, not only do I want the best for students, but I want to serve as a role model as well. My subjects include English, Reading, Chemistry, Pre-Algebra, Algebra II, Geometry, and Middle School Math and I. My test prep includes the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE), Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT), High School Placement Test (HSPT), SAT Mathematics, and Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT). Aside from tutoring, I love playing basketball, volunteering at my Mosque, and spending time with my friends and meeting new people. Overall, I am grateful to be a part of the Varsity Tutors team and love to contribute my skills to this organization and community.
