I have always been the kind of person who enjoys helping people. Not just with their homework, or carrying their groceries, or making a phone call, but helping to boost their sense of self worth by being a cheerleader; not through false flattery or adulation, but in convincing them that through hard work, focus and determination, they can conquer whatever difficulties hold them back at improving their skills in whatever they set out to do. I also enjoy connecting with people one one one, learning who they are, where they came from, discovering what makes them tick. This helps me in my teaching process - there is not one mold of teaching that fits everyone...it's important to be flexible in your teaching style without losing the underlying pedagogy of the subject matter. I have a great ear for languages and know four fluently, with another two at a basic level. Once you know one language, it's easier to learn another, once you start understanding the underlying rules of grammar that link all languages. I've also traveled a lot, and have lived for chunks of time in most of the countries whose language I speak. Language is not only a form of communication, it's about culture. That understanding of culture I could bring to the student I'm tutoring, to give them more depth of knowledge of the language. I've also been trained in the idiomatic pronunciation (diction) of these languages (I'm an opera singer) so I would be able to help the student pronounce the words with a more native-sounding accent. Finally, I've been teaching voice for many years and have worked with many types of students over that time, from all ages and backgrounds. This has given me a lot of experience that would transfer well to my tutoring. I look forward to working with Varsity pupils!

I am a native Spanish speaker and have always been attracted to Linguistics, especially applied Linguistics. I studied Hispanic Language and Literature at the National University of Mexico, and got certified to teach English as a Foreign/Second Language. At the same time I finished my Bachelors Degree in Voice at the National Conservatory of Music, graduating with Honors. I taught English at the University in Mexico before moving to New York City to pursue my Masters and Doctor of Musical Arts Degrees in Vocal Performance at the Manhattan School of Music. In addition to Spanish and English, I also speak Italian, French, and am learning German. Learning these languages as an adult, and the first two as a child, has given me a wide perspective of what it takes to learn a new tongue at different ages.I also enjoy a successful career on stage as a mezzo-soprano, performing opera, zarzuela, chamber and orchestral repertoire around the world. As a musician, I have learned that many strategies for learning music can also be applied to learning a new language, and I try to integrate these strategies with those of the students as much as possible to get better results.
I am a recently graduated Master's student from Boston, MA. I love foreign languages, and I have traveled all around the world trying to learn the native languages where I am. I have been studying language since age 11, and I have never stopped trying to master new languages. Besides tutoring, I am a classical musician, a singer, and a composer; I perform all around the world. I have experience working with all age groups and I first started tutoring at age 15. I am a patient, engaging, and fun tutor. I've been in New York for three years, and I love it here. In my spare time I play tennis, read books, or go to the beach with friends. I'm sure if I tutor you, you will not only learn but also have a lot of fun.
As an opera singer, I am constantly learning. I work every day to refine my craft. But, in order to do that, I had to discover my best learning method. During my years at Carnegie Mellon University, where I graduated with honors with a bachelors in English and a bachelors in Music, I worked as an after school tutor in the Pittsburgh area, helping students with difficult subjects. I discovered that it was less the student's inability to learn but rather the way a subject was presented. I continued my education at Manhattan School of Music, receiving my masters in Music. In my experience, every student has the ability to learn a subject, it is only a matter of discovering which learning method works best for them.
