I am the first person in my family to be born in the United States. My entire family are immigrants and it was only recently that my last remaining family members came over from China. This meant that growing up I was the eldest of all the children in my family. Being an only child myself, I had a lot of responsibility to take care and help raise my cousins who are all younger. My interest and experience in tutoring comes from helping my cousins through school.My oldest cousin after me is three younger which means she was about to learn everything that I just had. When I a senior in high school, my cousins ranged from elementary school to freshman in high school. Going off to college led me to reflect on all the years I spent helping my cousins through school. Ever since middle school I would help them with math, writing, reading, and even on science projects. Moreover, I taught them about school itself how to learn, how to make friends, where to go for lunch, and so on.Watching them grow up made me understand what teaching and tutoring really means. Having the support from someone older who can also assist in academics builds confidence that students will carry throughout their academic careers. This is especially important at a young age. Even when I was at college my cousins would call from time to time about a problem they were having, school related or not. This is why my preference for being a tutor at Varsity Tutors is middle school and high school. I'd like to help students build their academic confidence while learning what they need to for school.

I am a PhD student studying marine biology at Stony Brook University, where I study how plankton (very small animals in the ocean) move around and catch food. Before coming to graduate school, I did my undergraduate degree in Biology at Tufts University in Medford/Somerville, MA. My hobbies include knitting, running, and, of course, reading!Another one of my long-term interests is education. I worked with preschoolers for a full year in college through an AmeriCorps literacy program in low-income preschools. Later, I worked as a teaching assistant for five semesters (three as an undergraduate, and two as a graduate student), teaching biology, chemistry, and environmental science. Most recently, I worked at a local tutoring center with students ages 7-16, tutoring reading/writing, English, and math. In teaching and writing I like to focus on how to engage and make the story come to life.I also publish travel literature and some fiction outside of academia and serve as co-chair of the European Association of American Studies Women's Steering Committee.This past summer I crafted travel writing while spelunking in the Iowas Women's Archives and the Oregon State University Archives, as my co-writer and I have been crafting a discursive examination of food safety, activism, and grassroots women's voices. While obtaining my first doctorate, I filled the role of senior prosector in the anatomy lab, a task typically reserved for elite anatomists, which created a powerful self-realization and redirected my life's objective. My purpose gradually presented itself while investing copious amounts of hours into thinking, studying, and working with cadavers. In addition, my approach to teaching in classroom is through active involvement of all the students. When I was an adjunct assistant professor at the city university in a general chemistry laboratory course, I observed that the students worked effectively when the experiments were being demonstrated before they began the experiments. During the demonstrations, I tried to make sure that each step was properly understood. Engaging the students during class by asking questions gave them the opportunity to participate actively. Students that are active learners learn more when compared to passive students, it is important to include every student in the classroom and laboratory. Also, I took some time to learn all the student's names to encourage full class participation, treating each student as an individual. I want the students to look forward to the next class with high expectations and passion to learn new material. I believe in visual representation, creating a model to make it easier for the student to learn. For example, when discussing Lewis structure (e.g. CH4), I created an actual ball-and-stick model of the methane molecule, so that the students can visually see that the shape of the molecule is tetrahedral and the C-H bonding. Also, encouraging group work in a class or laboratory setting improves leadership skills in the students. Students worked in groups for class assignments, providing them the opportunity to build on leadership and team working skills. I am dedicated to making sure my students are successful in the classroom, and they feel enthusiasm for the subject. In teaching, I hope to instill the passion of learning in my students by sharing my passion in the subject. In the future, I plan to build upon my teaching strategies and skills by attending workshops and taking advantage of chances to teach when possible. It is important to engage the students. Also, incorporating the Bloom's Taxonomy for writing objective, which will show how learning is demonstrated through knowledge, understanding, application, evaluation and synthesis. In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I have conducted workshops, seminars and brown-bag lunches to support development for students and my colleagues' covering topics in research and teaching areas. I can teach general, inorganic, analytical chemistry, environmental science and organic chemistry with their labs at both the undergraduate and graduate level. If an online course is suggested, I can create an online course for these courses. In 2015, majority of students are gearing towards online teaching (STS Class 2, page 7). As an online instructor, many students and professional are using online study. I plan to use online digital learning objectives to help the students understand, apply, analyze and evaluate the course material.

I am a current civil engineering graduate at Stony Brook University. I am a recent medical school graduate from Dow University. Using proven techniques to memorize and understand key concepts, I teach my students how to break down the most difficult questions. It can be an overwhelming task to memorize the massive amount of information expected of a student in an anatomy or physiology course. The key is not memorization, but pacing yourself, practice and placing key concepts at the beginning and end of each session. Having a basic understanding of how our brain memorizes and processes information is an essential prerequisite for all students. When I was growing up, I didn't always have the guidance I needed at home, and I often wished for a teacher who could really understand me. I have been tutoring since 2011 when I retired from developmental optometry, a specialty in which I saw the same children and adults on a weekly basis, using many of the same concepts that are used in tutoring. I am a graduate of Queens College and Stony Brook University. I received my Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in history with a focus on American history after World War II. I am a rising junior at Stony Brook University majoring in Chemical and Molecular Engineering. My passion for tutoring started off in high school as I explained certain topics to my friends once in a while. Hello, prospective students! I have made a life of teaching and studying. Among the subjects to which I have given the most attention are philosophy and history, each of which I have also taught at a college level. My courses have always been writing-intensive, honing my skills at guiding students in mastering their self-expression in English. I have also taught test preparation courses for the SAT, GRE, and LSAT. The most rewarding of all my teaching endeavors has been helping guide my son through his remote and online education. Now I want to put all of this to use for students here at Varsity Tutors. I am a third year medical student at Wayne State University tutoring math and science. I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Stony Brook University with a major in Biochemistry. I first developed my passion for teaching from 7 years of experience as a martial arts and boxing instructor. I was able to develop my tutoring skill during my time at Stony Brook where I worked as both a calculus tutor and a chemistry teaching assistant. I am currently a medical student in Philadelphia, and have a degree in Biomedical Engineering from Stony Brook University. I have several years of experience tutoring SAT students, but thanks to my mixed background I have proficiency in a wide range of subjects including mathematics, biological sciences, engineering, and physical sciences.I am passionate about teaching, and have taught healthcare sciences to underprivileged high school students in my spare time. I got my bachelors at Washington University in St. Louis, double majoring in Environmental Earth Science and Germanic Language and Literature, and minoring in Writing. Currently I'm working towards my PhD in Marine Science at Stony Brook University (NY), doing research in the field of marine biogeochemistry. That's a bit of a mouthful, but basically it means I study the way living things interact with the chemistry of the ocean, and how that interaction gets recorded in mud and rock. Based on this expertise, I enjoy tutoring in general science, chemistry, and earth science.I also have a solid foundation in the language arts, having worked for three years as a Writing Mentor at Washington University in St. Louis. During this time, I was trained to help students with writing projects at any stage of the writing process, from brainstorming to line-editing. When I studied abroad in Germany for a year, I worked as a tutor for German students with English writing projects. This was a wonderful experience that allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of English academic writing by approaching it from a non-native perspective, while simultaneously improving my fluency in German, which I have studied for ten years. Following these experiences, I also enjoy tutoring in writing, English, German, and the Reading/Writing/Language sections of standardized tests (ACT, SAT, and GRE). My favorite subject to tutor is writing; I love to write myself, and there is nothing better than being able to help students develop confidence and enjoyment in their own writing.When I'm tutoring in any subject, my focus is not on the completion of a short-term task, like a specific assignment or test; rather, my goal is always to use the task at hand to help the student become a better reader, writer, learner, and thinker. Above all, I aim to teach the student to teach themselves; the ultimate accomplishment for me as a tutor is to no longer be needed.When I'm not teaching or doing research, I like to write stories, read science fiction books, play violin with the University Orchestra, and hang out with my two parakeets, Max and Pogo.

I am a Sophomore college student currently studying Mechanical Engineering at Stony Brook University. I recently graduated from high school with an advanced diploma in Math and Science, achieving a 95+ score in all regents tests. I have tutored students at my temple and at my high school. Even though I have tutored many subjects, my expertise is in highschool math and science classes. I also teach chess, having a 1200+ rapid rating. I greatly believe in teaching with fun and passion and I try my best to make the learning process for my student as fun as possible.
