I have a BS degree from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania where I majored in Chemistry and minored in Mathematics. I am currently a student at Stony Brook University in the Chemistry MS program. I enjoy tutoring because I am passionate about more people becoming engaged in the STEM fields and I view tutoring as a highly accessible way to that end. Tutoring provides for more intimate and individualized sessions for students to learn STEM subjects, which in turn improves their understanding of the subject. Therefore, facilitating this goal through this channel is a strong interest of mine that I also happen to take enjoyment in.

I have always been a goal oriented and reaching-for-the-stars individual. As a New York native, I graduated as the salutatorian from high school with regents' honors. I have excelled with 95%+ in all of my high school regents examinations. As a high school student I fell in love with Math & Science and frequently tutored my colleagues who were struggling with their classes. In my senior year of high school I achieved the NY1 Scholar Athlete scholarship and was placed on the NYC Chancellor's Honor Roll. I then went on to Stony Brook University where I graduated with my Bachelors of Science in Biology. At Stony Brook, I was on the Dean's List every semester and a Golden Key Honor Society Member. After completing my undergraduate science classes, I became a Teaching Assistant for Biology and Chemistry. As a teaching assistant, I met with students on a one to one basis during office hours and helped strengthen their problem areas. After undergrad, I went to medical school and graduated with honors. During medical school I tutored and prepared students for the United States Medical License examinations. I prepared and delivered daily lectures for the internal medicine students and increased the pass rate from 65% to 90%. I completed my medical clerkships and attained my M.D. December 2014.I am committed, devoted and conscientious to everything I set my mind on and my decision to tutor reflects my lifelong desire for personal growth and education. When tutoring, I believe that 'diagnosing' a student's weakness is essential to building a strong foundation. It is my motto to work hard and give nothing less than my very best. It brings joy to me and the thrill of seeing a student improve with my help drives my compassion and love for teaching. Teaching not only excites me but has become a part of me that I am dedicated to and passionate about. In my spare time I enjoy playing volleyball and running various races and marathons.

I grew up in Queens, NY and attended a small private school for most of my education prior to university. Having been a student in a small high school and a student in a huge university, I most definitely have an appreciation for personalized attention when endeavoring to learn any subject.

I am currently a sophomore at Stony Brook University. I am in the process of declaring a Multidisciplinary Studies, which means I'll be studying three concentrations: Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Applied Math and Statistics. I want to use AMS to help me get a job in Data Science, so that I can earn enough to get a PhD. in Philosophy.I have been tutoring ever since high school. I enjoy helping out those around me, whether they are clients or fellow peers. I have experience tutoring in fields as varied as Latin and Calculus. I have continued tutoring in college, helping out students with subjects such as Calculus 2 and Algebra. However, I think my specialty lies in test preparation, specifically with the SAT. Like many students, I had a great deal of trouble preparing for the SAT. But I realized that doing well on the SAT doesn't simply require hard work or mastery over the concepts involved (though they are important), it requires a targeted approach that familiarizes you with the style and approach of the examination. I went through a great deal of practice preparing for the SAT and learned a great deal that I can pass on to other students. Furthermore, I enjoy working with students and am good at understanding at what's going through their heads so that I can help them master concepts more quickly. My favorite hobby would have to be reading, since it is a lifelong passion that my sister imparted to on to me. I also enjoy going to the gym, bicycling, running, and watching The Flash.

My favorite courses to tutor involve probability and statistics, because I love how many layers each question has, and how much you can learn from doing even the simplest problem! When tutoring, I strive to create a calm and relaxed environment that helps students work through problems by drawing conclusions from what they already know. I believe learning is a beautiful thing, and I do my best to help others improve their learning skills!Outside of school, I am a total health nut. Becoming an educator and tutor is not just a career choice for me; it is a calling to guide others toward their fullest potential. I believe that every student can learn and thrive when provided with the right encouragement, patience, and tools for success. My education is what lifted me from poverty and transformed my life in a positive way. As an educator, I strive to create a classroom and tutoring environment that values growth, creativity, and resilience. My teaching philosophy centers on the idea that learning should be engaging and personalized. Each student brings unique strengths, experiences, and challenges, and it is my role to meet them where they are. Whether working with a whole class or one-on-one, I aim to build trusting relationships that empower students to take ownership of their learning. Tutoring, in particular, allows me to witness the power of individualized instruction. I find deep satisfaction in helping students grasp concepts that once felt out of reach, and in seeing their confidence bloom as they make progress. Every session becomes an opportunity to reinforce not only academic skills but also perseverance, critical thinking, and self-belief. I am committed to lifelong learning myself, continually refining my methods to adapt to diverse learners and evolving educational practices. Through teaching and tutoring, I hope to spark the same love of learning in my students that has guided my own journey.

I am a graduate of Stony Brook University. I received my Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a focus on the sciences as I followed a pre-dental course track. Since graduation, I have applied to and been accepted to the Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine, which I will be attending starting in August. I had previously been an SAT tutor with a test prep company for two years and I have experience in tutoring college level Physics at my University. As a result of my work experience and college education, I am proficient in all the SAT sections, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, general Essay Writing, Biochemistry, and Psychology. I personally enjoy tutoring SAT Critical Reading and Physics the most. To me, language is beautiful and I love exploring and discussing the mechanics of analyzing literature (as students must do on the Critical Reading Section). Physics, on the other hand, explains many of the wondrous everyday phenomenon around us. As a child, I would often think about why things moved the way they did and physics gave me those answers. I enjoy traveling and have been to several US states, Egypt several times, Australia, Italy, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Some of my most memorable experiences include scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef and sky diving. I speak Arabic semi-fluently and I enjoy reading and training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and kickboxing. Overall, I am very approachable and patient and will do my best to serve you as a tutor!

I am a biology major at Stony Brook University. I will be graduating this coming December and will be applying to medical schools for next year. Since I was young science especially biology has always fascinated me. Biology is the study of life and is a science that all of us can relate to. Growing up I too struggled in grade school and would often need the help of tutors to enrich my learning experience.Throughout this journey I've had the incredible opportunity of being tutored by some of the best teachers, many of whom explained the material better than my own professors did. Each of these tutors had their own individual styles of teaching and explaining concepts, and I have tried my best to assimilate their techniques when I teach students. My approach to teaching is very eclectic as I pick and choose the best strategies and ways to help students learn the material. I served 3 semesters as a biology teaching assistant at Stony Brook where I tutored students in subjects like Cancer biology and Cellular biology. Having taken the AP Biology exam and the SAT II Biology E/M in high school I also am aware of the type of material that is being tested in high school. With every student I meet I try to get to know their unique circumstances. Having a syllabus of their course work would be helpful since it would allow me to see which topics I should be focusing on. I am very willing to help my students succeed and welcome them to email me whenever they have questions.Aside from school, I have many interests and hobbies. I have been an avid piano player for the last 12 years and performed many times for NYSSMA. I am also a practitioner of Karate which I have also been doing for about 12 years. During my free time I like to read non-fiction books and write blogs online. I enjoy meeting new people and believe everyone has an interesting story to tell.

My goal is to promote an interactive and engaging tutoring experience to my students. My attempts to accomplish this are through visualization, analogies, and consistent questioning of course topics. Everyone learns material differently and every course that we engage in is different from the other. Thus it will be our goal to determine what works best for you individually and what weak spots need to be targetted for an eventual better understanding of the topicsMy educational background stems from Stony Brook University, where I obtained a bachelor's of science in biochemistry. My highest qualification for this position comes from the fact that I have spent a year as an undergraduate peer tutor for courses such as biochemistry I, molecular & cellular biology, and organ & cell physiology. I have also obtained level 1 certification by the college of reading & learning association. In addition, I have also had 3 years of experience as an undergraduate teaching assistant for biochemistry I, cellular & molecular biology, and introductory biology. Finally, I have also had 1.5 years of undergraduate research experience in structural biology, thus I am able to have a deeper understanding of the material that was taught to me in classes.Currently I am also working as a technical support agent for a biotech company, where solving scientific problems on research applications is something I do every day. I am also interested in one day becoming a physician and hope that this experience also helps reinforce the material that I have learned over the years. I am also very open to new perspectives, so please feel free to let me know your thoughts and opinions when we have sessions together!

I got my bachelors at Washington University in St. Louis, double majoring in Environmental Earth Science and Germanic Language and Literature, and minoring in Writing. Currently I'm working towards my PhD in Marine Science at Stony Brook University (NY), doing research in the field of marine biogeochemistry. That's a bit of a mouthful, but basically it means I study the way living things interact with the chemistry of the ocean, and how that interaction gets recorded in mud and rock. Based on this expertise, I enjoy tutoring in general science, chemistry, and earth science.I also have a solid foundation in the language arts, having worked for three years as a Writing Mentor at Washington University in St. Louis. During this time, I was trained to help students with writing projects at any stage of the writing process, from brainstorming to line-editing. When I studied abroad in Germany for a year, I worked as a tutor for German students with English writing projects. This was a wonderful experience that allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of English academic writing by approaching it from a non-native perspective, while simultaneously improving my fluency in German, which I have studied for ten years. Following these experiences, I also enjoy tutoring in writing, English, German, and the Reading/Writing/Language sections of standardized tests (ACT, SAT, and GRE). My favorite subject to tutor is writing; I love to write myself, and there is nothing better than being able to help students develop confidence and enjoyment in their own writing. When I'm tutoring in any subject, my focus is not on the completion of a short-term task, like a specific assignment or test; rather, my goal is always to use the task at hand to help the student become a better reader, writer, learner, and thinker. Above all, I aim to teach the student to teach themselves; the ultimate accomplishment for me as a tutor is to no longer be needed. When I'm not teaching or doing research, I like to write stories, read science fiction books, play violin with the University Orchestra, and hang out with my two parakeets, Max and Pogo.

Throughout my academic career, I always found ways to make hours of studying enjoyable by coming up with silly mnemonics, jokes, and puns about the material I would have to otherwise dryly trudge through. Whether it was my preparation for AP exam week, pre-med course midterms, MCAT, medical school finals, or my USMLE Step exams, I always found that the best way to manage stress, avoid burnout, and memorize material effectively was to make it fun rather than a chore. By combining my hobby of performing improvisational comedy with my passion for teaching, I've developed an engaging style of tutoring over my 3 years of experience as a college and med school TA. I love tutoring students in math, science, and economics because I have a strong background and foundation in these areas. I also wish that I had been introduced to the STEM and economics fields at a younger age, therefore my goal with tutoring is to inspire the students that I work with. I love tutoring in economics because I believe it provides essential concepts for any field that a student is eager to pursue. One of my favorite writers, Bret Lott, once wrote: "Of course words matter. Of course we must choose carefully." As a teacher, I aim to impart Mr. Lott's lesson to my students, chiefly, that we must give time and effort, as well as great care, to the manner in which we express ourselves. After all, writing is a craft, much like a painter taking brush to canvas, or a sprinter gliding along a track. Keeping this and other lessons in my mind, I teach my students the value of hard work and the virtue of perseverance, all in an effort to achieve their potential.I have spent the last three years working as a high school English teacher in the NYC public school system, and earned a Master's degree in Education (grades 7 to 12). After graduating from college, I helped my friend in prepping for her GRE because I wanted her to study more effectively for the test instead of wasting time trying out different studying techniques and various test prep materials. While I tutored a broad range of subjects, I am the most passionate about tutoring math as I have firm confidence in my knowledge of mathematics, and I mostly helped students with their math courses. During my tutoring experiences, I am a tutor who likes to utilize examples and real-life scenarios in my explanation.

I have tutored mainly math-related subjects for K-12 and college students for more than 5 years. I utilize graphs, interesting symbols, and a more user-friendly language to convey complex math concepts according to my students. I also teach conversational Chinese Mandarin. My goal is to let my students learn the subject efficiently and be prepared for exams, such as PSAT, SAT, or GRE, in a rather relaxing environment.

I absolutely love teaching! I've taught ESL, Spanish and Italian to students ages 7 through adulthood! I teach Spanish and Italian in a high school during the day and then teach ESL to adults and young children two evenings each week. During the summer months you'd think I'd rest right? Nope! I take my amazing 12 year old son and we travel to Central America to help build homes during the morning hours and I then spend the afternoons alternating between a middle school and a high school teaching ESL. I consider myself blessed to say that I have a career doing something I absolutely love and enjoy!I was raised in New York and received a B.A. in Hispanic Languages and Literature from SUNY Stony Brook. While doing my undergraduate study, I concentrated my studies in the Central and South American regions. My Master's degree is in Romance Languages (Italian/Spanish), also from SUNY Stony Brook. When I am not teaching or studying, I enjoy reading, going to the movies, boxing, and traveling! Well, I think that about wraps me up in a nutshell!Looking forward to meeting you soon!-Esme

My name is Melody and I am currently a graduate student at Teachers College, Columbia University studying Clinical Psychology. I have spent the last 6 years studying psychology and sociology. Some of my hobbies are running and doing yoga. I love to play piano, walk my dogs, and eat! I have been to most of western Europe, Mexico, and am planning on traveling some more before I start my doctoral degree.I have been tutoring students for the past 6 years in both formal and informal settings. I have tutored primarily in social sciences (psychology and sociology), English (writing, editing, and literature), and biology. My tutoring style varies depending on who I am working with - for example, if someone is a learner by doing then I won't have them watch me do a practice example, instead I will give them one and have them talk me through the steps they are going through. Each student is unique and should feel empowered! I like to foster that and have each student feel like they are actually in control of their learning.

I graduated from SUNY Albany in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts Cum Laude with a concentration in History, specifically World History, and a minor in Sociology. I finished graduate school in 2014 and received a Master of Arts in Teaching: Social Studies with Honors. I am a hard-working, self motivated educator who is constantly looking to gain experience and sharpen my skills.I have experience teaching 7th grade U.S. History and 12th grade Economics during my time as a student teacher and have experience with my own classroom as a leave replacement in a 9th grade Global History I class. In addition I have worked as a substitute in a variety of classes with students ranging from grades 6-12.Learning does not have to be boring. In fact, I believe it should be something both the student and teacher enjoy. If the teacher is enjoying the subject, the activities and lessons will be presented with more passion and energy. That is something I try to bring to each and every student. If the student is interested and engaged in the material, he or she will have a much easier time remembering the content and become self-motivated to want to learn more. I also strongly believe that each student has his or her own way of learning. Once I get to know a student and figure out what he or she likes or dislikes, I can cater my teaching to fit his or her preferences and enhance the learning experience. I am readily available and comfortable tutoring students from grades 6-12 in History and also Middle School Mathematics.Outside of teaching, I am interested in sports and fitness, cooking, traveling, and science. I am generally curious and love to learn as well as teach.

MS Stony Brook University • Building Engineer, Mechanical Engineering Stony Brook University
9+ Years Tutoring

I am a mechanical engineering student at Stony Brook University in an accelerated B.E./M.S. program. Currently I am finishing up both of my undergraduate and graduate degrees. I decided to become a tutor because I love academia, and I use math as well as physics daily. After my first few sessions I came to love it, and I have been doing it for a number of years now. I have tutored students ranging from elementary school through college, but my favorite level to help students is high school. In my sessions I like to show students the reason behind everything. I believe if you know why you're doing something, you can more easily understand how to do it. When I have some free time I like to work on small engineering projects. I just got my hands on a programmable micro-controller, and I have been making it do some pretty neat things! I also like to go biking.
