I'm currently a high school chemistry teacher, certified in Earth and Environmental Science, and I'm super excited to support in your academic needs!

I am a graduate of Hampton University and Brooklyn College, the City University of New York. My Bachelor's degree is in Broadcast Journalism and my Master's degree is in Education. For the past 8 years, I have worked as a Special Education Teacher for students in grades K-6. I am passionate about education because I believe that education is the passport to the future, but the future will belong to those who prepare for it today. I believe that by helping students develop their Reading, Writing, and Math skills, I am equipping them today with the tools they'll need to be successful in the future. I know that everyday, I have the privilege and responsibility of developing the minds of the future leaders, and problem solvers of the world. I tutor students in Phonics, Reading Comprehension, Writing and Math. My teaching style is fun, yet firm. I am personable, but professional. I love watching my students' confidence grow as they reach their goals. When I'm not working with students I love eating at local restaurants, listening/singing music, and binging on Netflix movies.
I'm Alex. I've lived in NYC for 7 years and currently live in Downtown Brooklyn. I work in marketing but have a strong background in Speech Language Pathology. I also make ceramics and practice improv, which I believe contribute to my dynamic approach to tutoring.I have a Bachelor of Science from New York University and a Master of Science in Speech Language Pathology from Brooklyn College. Prior to Graduate school I worked as a tutor for children between the ages of 7-12 focused on phonological awareness, reading comprehension, writing skills, and vocabulary. I taught college courses during my time at Brooklyn College in science, public speaking, and an overview of speech language pathology. I love teaching a variety of subject matter in creative ways as I believe true understanding comes when you are truly immersed in a topic. I really enjoy finding activities that encourage individuals to enjoy the tasks that are challenging them by incorporating favorite topics and games.I have experience working with individuals ages 0-99 years old. Through my graduate study I also worked closely with individuals with special needs. I understand that tutoring involves individualizing lesson plans because everyone learns differently. I love finding the methods that work best for my students and seeing the joy that comes from success in the classroom. I'm happy to answer any questions you may have!I love teaching English as a second language. Learning a language is frustrating at times but it can also be a lot of fun. I believe the more applications you have with a language and the more engaged you are the better your understanding will be. There are so many creative ways to approach learning a new language and I love working together with my student to find the ways that make it the most enjoyable and effective. I grew up in Hawaii but left the beaches to attend Boston College. In 2004 I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Marketing with a Mathematics minor, and moved to New York City to work as a high school math teacher. While teaching math full time in the subjects of Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and SAT Prep, I also attended graduate school at night at Brooklyn College and earned my Master's degree in 2007 with a focus on Math Education.I took a break from teaching to join Youth With A Mission (YWAM), a Christian missions organization, and traveled to Rwanda on a mission trip before returning to the east coast to work as a tutor. I served as the main math tutor at an education center in New Jersey for two years, helping students with their school work and aiding them in preparation for the SAT and other standardized tests including the ACT, SAT II, ISEE and SSAT.While working as a tutor I also authored a memoir based upon my time in Rwanda and in 2011 self-published a book entitled, "A Remnant in Rwanda."I love working with youth and teaching them the value of education, critical thinking, and living life for a great purpose. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, movies, everything Apple, and working out.

I am a graduate of both Brooklyn College, CUNY for my Bachelors in Geology and Queens College, CUNY for my Masters in Education. Aside from my more than 30 years of teaching and tutoring experience, I am well-traveled (parts of Asia, Europe, the Americas, and the Caribbean) and multi-lingual. I am passionate about my profession, ever searching for the best ways to help my students learn. I tutor a broad range of subjects, mostly in the areas of mathematics and the sciences. I am most passionate about Earth Sciences and Astronomy, Chemistry and test preparation for the SAT and ACT in Mathematics. In my experience helping struggling students prepare for Standardized Tests, I always am engaging my students in the problem-solving aspects of these examinations, ever honing their strategies to be successful. As a tutor, I firmly believe in engaging with and learning about how my students think and learn so that I can adapt my strategies for maximum success. I am a firm proponent of education, believing it to be absolutely necessary for an improved quality of life, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. In my spare time, I enjoy reading which enriches my life, enjoying time with my family, relaxing on a beach, and learning. I am a life-long learner, and I always encourage my students to learn from their own life experiences.
My passion for math and reading started at a very young age, but I quickly understood these subjects aren't fun for everyone. I started tutoring my peers in elementary school, and went on to organize formal peer tutoring groups in middle and high school, to help bridge gaps between teachers' expectations and my peers' reality.I've used my lifelong passion for math and problem solving to obtain my Master's degree in Computer Science, but I know that without a solid background in math and reading, my advanced degree would have been difficult to achieve.I prefer students to understand, from their unique point of view, why 1+1=2, why x*y=z or why "knock" only has one 'k' sound. Kids have a lot going on in their academic and personal lives, so I take time to talk to my students, take a few steps back from the problem and understand how they're tackling the problem. I've found that this conversation facilitates my understanding of how the student learns, and lends to their deeper understanding of concepts to apply to future, independent problem solving.
I have an undergraduate degree in mathematics (summa cum laude) from CUNY where I earned the prestigious Arthur M. Keller award for academic achievement in mathematics and science. My expertise is in Calculus, Probability, and Statistics. I worked for ten years as public librarian where I had the opportunity to tutor students of all ages and abilities in mathematics of all levels. Presently, I work full-time for a large non-profit organization in a management position where I combine technology and statistical analysis to make purchasing decisions as well as design efficient workflow procedures. I hope to put my experience and skills to good use helping your child achieve their potential while also developing an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics.

"My philosophy of education is that all children are unique and must have a stimulating educational environment where they can grow physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. I believe all children can learn and be inspired to become lifelong learners. I will assist my students to express themselves and accept themselves for who they are, as well as embrace the differences of others. Every classroom has its unique community; my role as the teacher will be to assist each child in developing their potential and learning styles.
I graduated from high school at Fordham Preparatory School in 2010 and am currently taking a semester off before my final year at the Macaulay Honors College at CUNY Brooklyn. I am working towards two bachelors degrees: a BFA in Creative Writing and a BA in Psychology. My first tutoring experience was in my senior year of high school during which I tutored juniors who wanted extra help preparing for the AP Language and Composition exam, which I had taken the previous year. In college I have helped students struggling with general essay-writing and specific English courses—mainly writing-intensive courses but in some cases literature classes as well. I have tutored students, including some non-native speakers, who struggled with essay-writing and grammar, syntax, and usage issues. My favorite subject to tutor was definitely AP Language and Composition mostly because of my interest in the subject itself. A lot of students know how to write a good essay but really struggle with this particular AP material because it requires you to take a step back and dissect the specific methods and structures at play in a given passage presented at random. Being able to put one's finger on the precise rhetorical methods that go into a strong piece of writing is really an enlightening experience. As far as my personal tutoring style, I prefer to provide students with the guidance and practice necessary to understand each individual facet of a given subject until they feel completely comfortable with the material on their own. I find it very important to avoid overwhelming students with the big picture of something like an SAT or AP exam and prefer to break down the material into manageable pieces which, once mastered, will allow the student to excel at the subject as a whole.Besides my academic pursuits, I enjoy going to shows for local bands in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and I participate in a bi-monthly poetry reading presented by a group with whom I workshop my personal writing projects. I spend a decent amount of time reading poetry and fiction when left to my own devices, but I also have a weakness for television and may just as likely be found catching up on reality shows.
I attended Brooklyn College for grad school, earning a Master's degree in English Literature. This followed my previous studies at Brunel University in London, which culminated in a Postgraduate Certificate in Contemporary Literature and Culture. I have a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from the University of York in the U.K. and an International Baccalaureate diploma from the Munich International School. My international education in Germany, Britain, and the United States has prepared me for the exciting challenges and rewards of sharing my bilingual English/German expertise through teaching and tutoring.I spent two years teaching German in grades 1 5 at the Munich International School. I'm familiar with the philosophies and demands of the IB program, from the students' as well as the teachers' perspective. In addition, I've taught English as a Second Language at an academic summer camp for teenagers in Germany. Currently, I organize and lead a creative writing group for adults with my husband at our home in Brooklyn. Over the course of my professional and academic trajectory, tutoring has supplemented and enriched my experience.Whether helping a fourth grader with intermediate-level German homework or guiding a high school senior in writing an analytical essay on Flannery O'Connor's short stories, I relish the chance to delve into the given subject matter and inspire enthusiasm and success. My passion is rooted in though not exclusive to languages, literature, and writing. I tutor all levels of English and German, with a preference for literary and creative genres. One-on-one tutoring presents my ideal teaching scenario: it allows me to provide my undivided attention, to tailor my approach to the student's needs, and to become a supportive and compassionate mentor all around. I strive to engage my student through a dynamic and friendly approach, and to make learning effective and fun.Besides reading and writing, I love live music shows, movies, making photo projects, skiing, the ocean, the night, ice cream, dogs, good company, long conversations, and traveling.
