Arianna

Expert Tutor

Hi! My name is Arianna Tabankin, and I am a pre-med senior at the University of Pennsylvania majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry and nutrition. I am graduating with honors (summa cum laude) and remaining at UPenn for a master's degree in public health. After two gap years I hope to continue on to med school. I have been a tutor for UPenn's Weingarten Academic Center for over three years and have hundreds of hours of experience tutoring biology. I also hold a mentorship position to help new tutors flourish in the program. I love to tailor tutoring sessions to best fit the needs of each individual student, whether that be more of a lecture format, doing practice problems, or creating a study plan together. Overall, I love learning about and teaching biology, so I find tutoring sessions to be a lot of fun!

I firmly believe that the vast majority of students who believe they are "bad at math" have tragically internalized this identity without true justification. I have personally seen students of mine shed that persona and it is a special thing to witness.

I prioritize clear goals and interactive lessons, often incorporating real-life examples that resonate with students' interests. Astrid

Expert Tutor

I graduated with a BS with Pre-med requirements from Cornell University and an MSW and MPH from Columbia University. I have experience in teaching Chemistry to incoming college freshmen and serving as a teaching assistant in psychology, biology, and math. I have also tutored elementary to middle school students in math, English, writing and have also assisted international school students in Japan. I am bilingual in English in Japanese. I have helped students who are upset and ashamed to regain confidence and joy in learning. I prioritize helping students finding study skills that work best for them, and reminding them that anybody can and will grow once we can figure out how they learn best and have fun. I ensure that students are understanding concepts by having them explain them back to me.

I believe that every student can become a better writer. There is a myth that you have to be born a Shakespeare to be a good writer, but that isn't true. You just need a solid foundation in the basics -- grammar and punctuation -- and you need to commit yourself to always increase your vocabulary so you will have a wide range of words to work with. After those skills are under your belt, it's merely a matter of practice. All human beings want to express themselves; writing is one chief way that we humans do that. The more you write -- and edit and proofread your writing -- the better a writer you will be. You will be able to develop a strong writing voice and become a great communicator in print.

Alexandra

Elementary School Science Tutor • +2 Subjects

Hi! My name is Alexandra, and I am a Princeton University Neuroscience major with 5+ years of tutoring experience. I specialize in SAT/ACT/PSAT prep and have successfully taught topics ranging from computer science and basic sciences to elementary reading and writing and college essay writing. In high school, I scored a perfect 36 on the ACT on my first attempt, a perfect 1520 on the PSAT/NMSQT, won "finalist" status in the National Merit Scholarship competition, and was a medalist in the New York Science Olympiad. As an undergraduate at the top-ranked university, I focus specifically on standardized test preparation, including the SAT, ACT, and PSAT. I have an understanding of the structure and timing of the exams and the strategic approaches that are required to achieve top scores. I have successfully supported students in improving their performance through individualized study plans because I understand that not all students can use the same approaches to succeed. My approach emphasizes effective time management and a mastery of recurring question types. Outside of college test preparation, I have tutored students ages 5 to 17 in a variety of topics. A common teaching approach I use is to introduce new concepts with example problems that we work through together. I then explain each strategy and help the student through another problem, encouraging them to explain their thinking step by step. Finally, I let the student tackle a problem independently. Once a student can articulate why a method works, they are truly ready to apply it on their own. While this method suits many students, I understand that everyone learns differently and pride myself on being adaptable within and outside of lessons.

I am a researcher who graduated with a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Penn State University and a B.S. in applied physics from Columbia University. I have found great passion in teaching and mentoring students in physics and materials science, whether through informal educational training activities at the Discovery Space, assisting in laboratory classrooms for undergraduates, or helping students with difficult problem sets for thermodynamics or quantum mechanics. I've seen the best success when students can interact with a complicated concept in multiple ways and pull on their own experiences as metaphors to the system in question - after all, this is part of how science is actually done! Currently in my spare time, I enjoy reading, strategy games, and learning Mandarin.

I am a graduate from the University of Pennsylvania where I received a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry. I started peer tutoring in high school, staying after school to help fellow students with AP Chemistry content before major exams and quizzes. I currently tutor in math (up to AP Calculus BC/Calculus II), chemistry, physics, biology and offer test prep for the SAT and several SAT Subject tests. However my favorite subjects to tutor involve chemistry, due to the various real world examples that make the subject more comprehensive and ultimately enjoyable for students. My hobbies and interests include dancing, solving crossword puzzles, binging Netflix TV shows and hiking.

Middle School Math Tutor • +8 Subjects

I am a graduate of Brown University who tutors high school students via Skype or in person in the SATs, PSATs, and/or the SAT Math 2 Subject Test. I had a wonderful tutor for the SATs and for the SAT Math 2 Tests, so I understand how the standardized test tutoring process can be productive, fun, and ultimately successful. I also understand the importance of tailoring the process to the students individual abilities and needs. In high school, I tutored elementary school students in math, reading, and writing, and I tutored my classmates at my school's math center. I am passionate about film and film production, and in my spare time I also enjoy reading and basketball.
