Session Summaries by Latin Tutors

Latin Tutoring review by Olivia in West Valley City, UT
The student has a Spanish test tomorrow, so we used flashcards to review all of the vocabulary from the first unit in her textbook. Since she mentioned that she would need to be able to correctly spell the words on the test, I made sure to have her practice writing each word as we went over the meanings. She was surprised to see that she actually knew the majority of the words the first time we went over them! I can tell that she has been putting in a lot of effort in Spanish class, and it definitely shows in her confidence with translating sentences and conjugating verbs. As with our last session, we spent the last 10 minutes doing interactive practice in the language app, which helped to reinforce her skills in identifying pronouns and distinguishing between los/las, una/un, etc.

We covered conjugation of verbs in the reflexive form and the memorization of a list of verbs. We then practiced verbs using flashcards. First, by looking at the word in Spanish, the student would say the verb in English; then, looking at the verb in English, and she would then say the verb in Spanish. I helped her learn the meaning of the verbs by acting out the meaning. At the end of our session, we worked a little bit on Math. We discussed solving quadratic equations using the quadratic formula and factorization when there is no independent term (y-intercept = 0).

The student and I prepared for his upcoming quiz on direct object pronouns. We reviewed guided notes I had created for him to give him a better understanding of when to use direct objects and how to use them in regular sentences, with infinitives and with present participles. He did several practice activities to ensure he was completely prepared for his quiz today.

I'm really proud of the student for getting a 98% on his midterm exam. His teacher gave him another opportunity to do a presentation, so we worked on that dialogue this session. I asked him to read each card 21 times and then do the whole thing 21 times because the teacher really wanted this information memorized.

Latin Tutoring review by Shalon in West Valley City, UT
We reviewed the current unit vocabulary that the student just received. We covered places such a bank, pharmacy, and supermarket, as well as directions. I then provided her with practice sentences where I required her to conjugate for me a specific sentence that I created in English into Spanish using that vocabulary. She did well, as always. Since she does very well with simple sentences, I am moving her along by requiring her to either create longer sentences with more detail or provide shorter sentences using additional vocabulary. I also encouraged her to email me any vocabulary lists and/or syllabi she may receive from her teacher. This will enable me to be able to better focus on exactly what they are learning in class.

Latin Tutoring review by Omar in West Valley City, UT
On Sunday, we created index cards based on the chapter the student was working on, in preparation for her Spanish quiz on Monday. We did several drills. She was resilient and did well during the drilling. Then we went over "estar" versus "ser." We did conjugation exercises for the verbs, as well as a review of when it is appropriate to use each verb respectively. We also squeezed in a quick review of reflexive verbs and personal pronouns. I think the tutoring session provided the tools for her to do well on her exam.
