Science Tutoring review by Victoria in West Valley City, UT
During this session, we reviewed for a quiz the student has tomorrow. The quiz will cover the topics of density, significant figures, and the concepts of precision and accuracy. We reviewed what all the terms meant and made sure she understood them and then we did several problems about finding density from mass and volume and also solving problems with correct significant figures. She understood everything very well and felt very confident in her abilities.

The student brought to the session a slide presentation covering thermodynamics in a biochemical context. We covered Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, entropy, and the equilibrium constant in terms of conceptual descriptions and mathematical relationships. She absorbed information well and was able to deliver correct answers to questions about the material without requiring much prompting.

The student and I covered the lecture objectives for sections 19-22. We answered questions that we had not yet completed, and we reviewed topics that would be covered in his upcoming test. He only seemed to struggle with material that he had not yet reviewed, so we made these topics a priority for studying. He had been doing a great job of keeping up with the study schedule that I helped him form. He needs to continue to work on understanding diagrams in order to help with visualizing the cell activity. I suggested that he continue to study in conjunction with the schedule, get all missing notes, review subject matter that we covered, and review all diagrams in the book. He will be receiving a grade after his test this week.

We reviewed for the student's upcoming Science test, which will cover ionic and covalent bonds, and traits of elements determined by their number of valence electrons. By the end of our session, he was able to tell me the different characteristics between ionic and covalent bonds, and how the formed. In addition, he was able to explain the different groups of the Periodic Table, and their corresponding number of valence electrons. We worked through the practice questions his teacher provided, and the student was able to answer all of them correctly! I am confident that he will do very well on his quiz.

Today, we had another session on the conservation of energy for conservative and nonconservative situations. We looked at several problems and at the end I gave some strategy for solving problems for the student's test. Overall, she has been doing very well in solving the problems and if her test was a standard test of this section, I would expect her to get an A.
