Biology Tutoring review by Elizabeth in West Valley City, UT
Today the student and I went over the cell and the organelles in the cell. I posted a picture and had her label each organelle and describe its function. She needed some help remembering what each function was so I gave her some analogies to help her remember the details. We did this process a couple of times to make sure it stuck. At the end we also went over some questions so that I could gauge her question taking ability. I think that if she just studies and memorizes the information she should do pretty well on her test.

We previewed the student's next biology topics, covering intro to cell biology. I made sure she took notes on key words, and discussed topics outside of the textbook that she had questions on. She now knows the basics of how cells were discovered, what defines a cell, and some basic types of cells. We also started talking about the cell membrane.

We covered one of the student's old quizzes that he had questions on. It covered macromolecules and cell structure. He was very good at getting the concepts once I re-explained them to him. Over all I think the session went well and I think he understands why he got those question wrong and will not miss them in the future.

Biology Tutoring review by Tiwa in West Valley City, UT
We reviewed the following material in preparation for the student's quiz on Thursday: pedigrees, dihybrid crosses, and key genetic terms. The student initially struggled with remembering the definition of a few terms but by the end of the session she seemed to have a better handle and plan on how to memorize them. We worked through some practice problems for dihybrid crosses and pedigrees. After I walked her through some examples, she then attempted to tackle some of them on her own while I gave her feedback along the way. I made a practice quiz to cover some key terms and Punnett square practice so that she would have another resource to use while she studied for her quiz.

Biology Tutoring review by Gabriel in West Valley City, UT
Today's session focused on the first half of chapter 8. We covered the steps of mitosis and the cell cycle. We then went on to discuss cancer and all of the different ways it invades the body and the different ways to combat it. The student was a bit surprised to find out the immune system will actually fight and remove cancerous cells as they arrive, but the immune system must be strong. We also talked about the how many of the same therapies used to destroy the cells can also kill healthy dividing cells. We concluded on the reasons why it is important to prevent cancer by making wise decisions, eating the best foods and avoiding known chemicals that can lead to mutations which is all a little easier said than done. Next session we will complete the chapter by discussing meiosis and genetic malfunctions associated with bad chromosomes.
