Session Summaries by English Grammar and Syntax Tutors

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Lindsay in North Chicago, IL
Started with some technical difficulties, but once those were worked out, the session went well. We reviewed the student's spelling words for the week and identified the ones he thinks are the most difficult for him. Then, we did a little bit of review on ie/ei words, because there are quite a few on this week's list. We also worked on using the words in sentences that he came up with, and finished by practicing some of the words that he has written in his notebook.

Starting to work on science reading comprehension. Excels when combining multi-sensory learning - drawing, repetition, writing words with phonetic pairing, and physically demonstrating scientific concepts in English (dropping object to convey gravity). She is improving in her pronunciation.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Kendra in North Chicago, IL
Student 1 and I kept working today on her analysis of literature. I had her read a speech by Winston Churchill, an excerpt from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, and an article about General's Grant and Lee. We discussed use of language, rhetorical questions, stylistic choices, and even worked to find parallels between these and a few of the other readings we had done recently. She did really well at looking more deeply into the text and putting her thoughts into words. With Student 2, we started with some vocabulary and using context clues to figure out definitions. He has a pretty good knowledge of words, but seems to struggle a bit when he doesn't know the word, not able to figure it out using only context. We will keep practicing using context to find meaning as we work together. We also did some reading of a short story accompanied with some comprehension questions.

Student 1 and I reviewed a recent vocabulary test and discussed strategies for comprehending the vocabulary on upcoming tests. We also studied his scientific method study sheet in preparation for his upcoming test. Student 2 and I spent the 45 minutes reading from his BioScience book, which was the story of Henrietta Lacks. We discussed vocabulary words that Student 2 was unfamiliar with, checked for comprehension, and practiced reading out loud.
