Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Phonics Tutoring review by Bridgette in North Chicago, IL
The student worked on her admissions essay for high school. She continued where we left off last week. This time, her writing skills improved dramatically because she was able to provide concrete examples to support her essay. Together, we worked together to provide even more examples to support her thesis statements. We also worked together on writing the conclusion. Since this was our last session, I spent most of the time giving her tips on how to improve her writing. I think she will do great on her exam!

Phonics Tutoring review by Ross in North Chicago, IL
Today we covered the technique of organizing ideas through an outline, a skill useful for both organizing thoughts and for taking notes in class. We also covered writing with a purpose and developing theses. Over the next few sessions, I would like to focus on time management skills while writing, budgeting time for prewriting, and mastering the skills necessary for the student's upcoming standardized tests. The student's grammar and vocabulary are exceptional. In addition to finishing the essay we were working on, I feel he would greatly benefit from keeping a journal organized in outline form to help practice putting his thoughts to paper.

Phonics Tutoring review by Dana in North Chicago, IL
Since this was my first session with the student, I administered a quick age appropriate paragraph assignment to see where he was with his writing. I explained to him how to use transition words to make his writing smooth. I used examples of words used to show order, to indicate a purpose, and to compare. With this in mind, we started with a simple argumentative essay, explaining whether or not the arts should remain in schools. I also looked over his planner to see the topics he was learning in school. This gave me some insight as to what he needs help with and what is expected from him in school. Lastly, we worked on his geography assignment for the week. The student needs help focusing and organizing his notebooks. I will be working on study skills and organization techniques with him.

Phonics Tutoring review by Peter in North Chicago, IL
Specific concepts covered include sentence structure, spelling out numbers, use of Roman numerals, avoid ending sentences with a preposition, and formatting and expressing ideas in a logical chronological sequence. The student struggles with writing what he know in prose and being clear in his intentions. The student had an excellent attitude: he was receptive, quick to learn, and polite. I left him to restructure the end of the essay so the reader can understand the past tense. I suggest he read his paper out loud, avoid over referencing, and watch out for repetitive words. I saw a writing narrative checklist that alerted me to the areas I needed to cover in this first session, particularly in transitions from one idea to the next. I think the student gained an understanding of analyzing his own work. A definite win!

Phonics Tutoring review by Celeste in North Chicago, IL
Spelling Practice: our, their, expression, surprised, emotions, basketball, bright, fight, and light. Read Aloud: Graveyard Book, text structure, vocab (Romans, encountered). Drills: letter sounds and rhyme. Review: nouns, subjects, and verbs. Listed three examples of person, place, and thing nouns. Practiced spelling words again using hand spelling technique. The student read aloud from "Off-the-Wall Inventions" and summarized the content. He did really well with this, and is able to easily identify the subject of a sentence using this method. He did a lovely job today staying focused and following my directions. He is such an intelligent young man.
