Session Summaries by Writing Tutors

Writing Tutoring review by Viktoria in North Chicago, IL
During this session, we proofread and edited the student's cover letter for her application to an internship. I advised her to read this (and any) piece of writing aloud once she reaches the editing stage. In doing so, we caught a few hitches and improved the overall clarity and flow of the letter. The introduction required the most revision: we strove to eliminate vagueness and "filler" and instead to make a strong, confident, and memorable impression. In addition, we proofread her bio and made some minor adjustments. Together, we narrowed in on two technological questions to contribute to the class forum. Then we discussed suitable personalities for her media profiles, and settled on two choices. She wrote a paragraph on each as a pitch, which she will present in her seminar. Again, we emphasized the importance of working systematically through one piece at a time. She was able to stay organized and level-headed, despite her approaching deadlines for these assignments. We were productive and hopefully she can hold on to a sense of trust in her own abilities.

Writing Tutoring review by Maggie in North Chicago, IL
(8:40 - 9:00 am - 20 mins) The student and I began the session by discussing the best use of our time and general progress since last week. (9:00 - 10:00 am - 60 mins) We began by discussing his progress for the second short paper, which was the goal for the session. He decided to focus on Mongol sieges of Japan. He had the raw materials for the paper and we worked on creating an organized outline. The student will follow up by filling in the blanks on his paper and refining the thesis. (10:00 am - 10:40 am - 40 mins) We discussed progress on the final paper on the Siege of Vienna. He made some progress since last week in looking at the prompt and the recommended article, and also finding the overview of the sieges of Vienna in his textbook. We discussed the prompt in detail and spent some time looking up potential sources in his university's databases. Our focus was on sources about the views of the opposing sides (Christian/Muslim). The student will follow up by seeking sources from military history secondary literature to fill out the picture.

Writing Tutoring review by Kristen in North Chicago, IL
She struggled a bit today with the essay writing. I think for this we will have to go far back and revisit the basics of constructing an essay. Next week, we will work with very simple topics to construct paragraphs from and build her writing skills up from there.

Writing Tutoring review by Elizabeth in North Chicago, IL
She told me that she got 100 on her geometry quiz last week! She didn't have any math homework to work on, so we worked on a paper for her Latin class instead. We talked about good strategies for outlining, writing, and revising papers. She seemed very comfortable with the organizational part. However, she struggled to catch grammar and spelling mistakes during the writing and revising process. I left her with a couple common mistakes to watch out for, but the most effective way to become a more comfortable writer is simply to read a lot!

Writing Tutoring review by Kendalle in North Chicago, IL
She wanted to discuss and outline a literature review that is due next month. She was most worried about the format and how to begin writing. She was anxious about starting but had already started writing something before our session to try to take a stab at it herself. I gave her ideas on how to outline her paper using the instructions from the professor and what key things to look for and focus on while reading the studies for the literature review. When I left, we had worked out an outline and a plan for her to write a draft that I can review before the due date.
