Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Reading Tutoring review by Maggie in North Chicago, IL
Summary of tutoring session: The student and I began by discussing his educational and professional background and his motivations for pursuing the current coursework. We briefly reviewed a writing coaching agreement I prepared. We discussed the format of his course (Global Military History to 1800), the weekly posts, and the key assignments (2 short and 1 long papers). We discussed how he likes to write. He likes to edit printed out drafts and likes composing by hand. I asked him what he felt his strengths and weaknesses with writing are. He indicated: Strength = having the ideas, Weakness = getting started (blank page syndrome) and time management. We spent the remainder of the session on two goals: 1) getting some ideas for the short paper and this week's discussion post recorded 2) creating a timeline of steps for the long paper To achieve the goal... 1) we analyzed his excellent reading notes together and created some brainstorming charts based on his notes. These gave him a start for this week's post and the next short paper (socio-economic factors for Mongols & Mamluks). 2) We worked backward from his final deadline to set goals and break the final paper into manageable steps (potential topic: Siege of Vienna).

Reading Tutoring review by Viktoria in North Chicago, IL
Since this was our first session and the student's semester has just begun, we drew up a list of assignments to be completed for each class. Due to her considerable workload, we devised strategies that will help her stay organized, focusing on one assignment at a time. We reviewed her course syllabi together and attained an overview of the expectations and tasks ahead. In tackling her first assignment for the Strategic Storyteller class - the writing of two six-word memoirs - we brainstormed some relevant experiences in her life so far and whittled them down to a humorous and informative tag-line (an exercise that will prove useful to her ambitions in marketing and branding). She also wrote a brief bio for her Navigating the Digital Frontier class in my presence, without requiring any further assistance. For our next session, she will draft a cover letter for us to proofread and edit together. She seemed motivated in her studies and receptive to advice and feedback. She demonstrated good initiative.

The student and I discussed his essay on privacy. I helped him with thesis development, and we discussed his outline and revisions. We also reviewed how to properly cite a source and use MLA. He will send the paper on Monday for further review.

She received another 100% on her weekly spelling test. Today, we worked on reviewing for her upcoming test, as well as reading short passages and answering questions from the worksheets I provide. We also did a few math worksheets for rounding and measurements.

Reading Tutoring review by Allison in North Chicago, IL
She was lovely to work with. We read some reading strategies in her PSAT prep book, and then practiced them with the sample problems given. She was very attentive and engaged, and I feel like we made great use of the time. I look forward to working with her!

Reading Tutoring review by Adriane in North Chicago, IL
She was very energetic today--I made the mistake of saying that she was "bouncing off the walls," at which point she actually started to do so because she was feeling so exuberant! We finished her homework without much fuss, and then she started writing another guessing game: she described various animals' habitats and diets, and I had to guess the animal using her written descriptions. She didn't feel like reading a book from the library today, but she started to write a new book of her own about lions. SO ENERGETIC!
