Geometry Tutoring review by Valentina in West Jordan, UT
The student and I completed several exercises related to finding the volume of geometrical solids, mostly triangular and square prisms and pyramids. She is getting the hang of it, and just needs a little more practice to master the concepts. She made a 100 on her previous quiz. Awesome job!

Geometry Tutoring review by Kasra in West Jordan, UT
In today's session with the student, we delved further into the subjects of circles, arc lengths, and angle measures. He is doing remarkably well with this material. It seems to be the most intuitive for him, and so we kept on working ahead in his book, just like we did last week. He is now a full 4 sections ahead of the class. He has a quiz tomorrow on arc lengths, and I know he will do very well because, not only has he been receiving full points on the previous quizzes in this chapter, but from today's session his confidence is high, and he continues to excel in the more complicated material we went over. Overall, I am understanding more and more where his points of weakness are, and they do not come from his lack of knowledge. Instead, he has certain tendencies to rush and not check his work, which lead him to making mistakes. Now that he is in a chapter that he feels really comfortable with, I believe it is time to shift to uncovering more about these common pitfalls and addressing ways to strategize and improve his test-taking skills. For extra practice, I will develop a mock test that I want him to take under test conditions so we can evaluate exactly what happens on his school exams. I believe this will be a big step in getting to the root of his problem, and I look forward to helping him take this step in the direction of continued success for him in his high school career.

Geometry Tutoring review by Asta in West Jordan, UT
We continued with quadrilaterals. The student needed some gentle reminders about how to find the slope, distance, and midpoints of lines, but she quickly remembered those concepts. We did one part of her homework together, then she was able to apply everything we talked about to the second part of her homework really quickly. We also came up with some study plans for her upcoming history test and French quiz. In addition, I suggested to her that she should spend 10-15 minutes before she does homework on each subject to quickly review what was talked about in class, so she can remember better what was taught each day.

Geometry Tutoring review by Lynn in West Jordan, UT
We covered part of the chapter of transformations, including reflections, translations, rotations, and tessellations. She struggled mostly with rotations, which involved using a protractor to draw the new shape. The concept of rotating counterclockwise/clockwise was also confusing for her. Overall, she struggles problems that involve coordinates/graphing, but throughout the session she seemed to get more comfortable as I reviewed the material with her. I reinforced the basic concepts for each type of transformation and told her to focus more on the ordered pairs given and just apply the rules. Her textbook has good practice problems.

Geometry Tutoring review by Nora in West Jordan, UT
The student needed help this week with the concepts covered on a pair of Geometry quizzes. First, we looked at the different techniques used for finding the length of one side of a right triangle when the lengths of two other sides are given (using the Pythagorean theorem) or when the triangle is a dilation of a similar triangle for which the length of the corresponding side is given (using a scale factor). We practiced both techniques and explored which kinds of problems would require each approach until she felt more comfortable. Next, we reviewed the trigonometric functions that her class had just begun studying, and which she found hard to understand or remember. We practiced finding the sine, cosine, and tangent of various angles, and explored how the values of those functions changed depending on which vertex was our starting point. Once she began thinking in terms of which corner she was "standing" at and which leg of the triangle was "across from" her, she seemed to get the hang of all three functions.

Geometry Tutoring review by Reilly in West Jordan, UT
The student and I went over his test. We mostly covered problems dealing with trig functions and triangles. The student mostly had difficulties with setting up the problems, he was just fine with most of the math. I suggested that the student focus on visualizing each problem and drawing a picture to better understand how to set up the triangle and solve the problem.
