Session Summaries by English Tutors

English Tutoring review by Chanel in Lehi, UT
As we are nearing the end of the semester, things are getting busy! This week we worked on editing the student's final essay for English class. The essay is to focus on a major theme that is demonstrated by at least three of the readings from this semester. She did an excellent job coming up with ideas for what to write about and how to structure the essay. She needed guidance with editing writing, overcoming writing stumbling blocks, and understanding/finding examples within the text. I helped her with some strategies for finding examples in the readings, including ctrl+f and internet searches for ideas. I left her with a clear plan for how to succeed in finishing the essay on her own since our time was up. She needed to repeat the process for the next two readings and then form a cohesive conclusion. We will have one more session next week and then it is finals! Keep up the hard work!

As we work on the program, we dialogue about the purpose of the lesson. I remind the student that he needs to be aware of how to recognize vocabulary words, base word, prefixes, context clues, antonyms, and synonyms. He had a better attitude today. He sent his history teacher an email stating that he completed his homework. I guided him on how to write a proper email. We are progressing on the levels since we started, from A to C.

At this session, we focused on writing an extended response, like it is expected of them on the state test. We worked on a graphic organizer and then looked at the rubric that is used to score the test.

English Tutoring review by Leslie in Lehi, UT
Based on the student's performance on the reading comprehension exercises up to this point, I shifted the focus of her sessions to practice of parts of speech. After we completed her vocabulary homework, I presented her with a list of word groups where she would need to identify the noun, verb, adjective, or adverb form of a word. She had difficulty on about half of the words. I believe part of the reason for this is lack of knowledge of word meaning, which we rectified by looking up definitions. Towards the end of the exercise, her confidence grew. I want to continue to practice identification of parts of speech, and I also want to practice basic sentence diagramming at our next session. We will also work on more reading comprehension next Tuesday, as her December standardized test is soon to be administered.

Based on the student's questions about health insurance terms from last week, we read about key health insurance terminology. We then identified these terms, and general new words and phrases, in an article about changes to health insurance plans coming up. We also worked a bit on the grammar of complex questions. She asked good questions about these. For homework, she will read an additional article about health insurance, identifying any new words, and also write about the components she likes and does not like in her own insurance plan.
