English Tutoring review by Adriane in West Jordan, UT
The student and I read two books from Mo Willems' "Elephant and Piggie" series today. She read the elephant's voice, and I read the pig and other animals' voices. She is doing very well with sight words--once she commits a word to her reading vocabulary, she is able to read it again with little trouble. She is not yet transferring reading skills from word to word--silent letters like the "w" in "wrong" still trip her up a bit, and then do so again in similar words like "wreck." But that's very normal at her age, and I'm not worried about it.

English Tutoring review by Abe in West Jordan, UT
The session went well. It was our first in-person meeting. The student engaged with the reading and utilized drawings to create her own sentences. The book was above her reading level, and I offered a lot of assistance. For the next session, we will be reading a lower-level text. I will also try to diversify the lesson to integrate a greater diversity of activities. Overall, it was a fun class!

The student and I talked about A Raisin in the Sun by reviewing his answers to the study guide questions. I gave him suggestions about how to add literary terms to his answers and checked that he answered each question completely. We spent some time talking about constructing theme sentences and looking for the greater significance of details. Lastly, we reviewed the characters, major events, symbols, and important passages to help him prepare for his upcoming quiz.

English Tutoring review by Emily in West Jordan, UT
The student finished her homework and wrote the main events for chapters 5-6. After going over the main events, I asked her for a general tell back of both chapters. We then discussed character development. Then, we read chapter 7 together. She and I took turns modeling tell backs. We stopped for vocabulary discussion whenever she had trouble with a word. We also stopped for meaning discussion. She told me that our tutoring sessions are helping her with her school work. She is using tell backs to help her remember her school reading, and when she reads a textbook, she writes down the main event or main idea of each paragraph. I was very excited to hear that she is applying her new skills to her schoolwork. I assigned her chapter 8 as homework. I told her to read the chapter and write 3 main events.

English Tutoring review by Joseph in West Jordan, UT
The student focused on reading during his session today. He started by reading a fiction book that he had chosen. He did a very good job of reading the book and made corrections as he read words that he did not immediately recognize. After the reading, I asked him a series of questions regarding the setting, characters, conflict, and cause and effect to check his retention of the story and of details. He did a good job of answering the questions and looked back into the reading for any evidence he needed to justify his answers. After this book was concluded, he started reading another book that I had provided him with. This one was a little more difficult, but he did a good job of doing a picture walk with the book and making predictions based on those pictures and any prior knowledge he had on the subject matter. He and I worked on strategies for decoding words that he did not recognize, especially segmenting the words into their syllables so he could more readily read them.

English Tutoring review by Christine in West Jordan, UT
Today, the student continued writing his essay about the book, Brave New World. He finished about two-and-a-half pages and said he would ask his teacher for help the next day for more suggestions on lengthening it. I advised him to add more concrete examples to his essay, as well as more analysis of those examples.
