The parent shared her progress report with me. Math and spelling were areas needing assistance. Otherwise, she had all decent marks. I checked the student's homework comparing numbers using "the hungry alligators" that her teacher uses. She corrected two minor errors. Her teacher stated that the student had a problem with writing dictation. Today, we began by my dictating a list of words that were on one of her worksheets. She did very well except the vowels in "what" and "when." We discussed the sounds that the letters make to create a word and how to use the sounds to form the word dictated if she does not have the spelling memorized yet. We continued comparing numbers using her base ten block set to, first, understand the value each number and, then, show which number was larger with the use of "less than" (<) and "greater than" (>). Last, she read Flynn Saves the Day and Biscuit Goes to School. The student has a very sweet temperament and we get along very well.

The students finalized on essays and reviewed the Math section. Student 1 and 2 are to have two tests completed by Saturday using strategies and we will review all 3 latest sections then. Their scores have consistently been about 5 points higher than when we started so that is promising.

I started this session with the student by going over the English section of a practice test.  We then went over strategies for her to use so that she could get through the Reading section with enough time to answer every question.  She picked up on these strategies very quickly, and by the end of our session she could quickly go through reading questions and find the correct answer.  We ended our session going over some sample math problems.  The student seemed to absorb many of the key math facts that we went over, and she seemed to have a much better grasp of how to approach math problems on the ACT.
