Session Summaries by Test Prep Tutors

Test Prep Tutoring review by Connie in Long Island, NY
We began our session by focusing on the math questions that the student seems to have the most trouble with. We did two sets of practice questions which she did very well on. She only struggled with the last question of each set, which was the hardest. These questions were both daunting at first glance because of the lack of numerical values given, but we worked on strategies on how to approach such questions. Next we went over the two math sections she completed before our session. She has been doing very well and seems very comfortable with all of the material. She will complete one full length practice exam before our next session, so we may get a sense of her progress.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Lauren in Long Island, NY
The student and I worked mostly on Math this week. We worked on word problems, and especially on calculating percentages and how to use a "plug in a random number" method for solving some types of algebraic problems. We also spent about half an hour getting to know the test--how its scored, what the sections are, and how much time is allowed for each section. At the end of the session, we looked at the essay component of the test, and talked about a "plan of attack." She agreed to write a short essay for next week in about 15 minutes, trying a plan of attack with brainstorming and outlining first, and writing second. She is very smart, and has good intuition about problem solving, math, and organizing her writing. I think our biggest goal is to familiarize her with the types of questions she will go up against, and make sure she feels confident in her test taking skills.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Gary in Long Island, NY
Today, we began with a quick quiz on the vocabulary from last week. She did not remember some of the words during the quiz, so I told her to spend more time memorizing them. Then we moved to the math book and began going over concepts and completing practice questions. After an hour, we started with reading comprehension. We went over all the types of reading comprehensions questions, strategies for each type of question, and started doing practice questions. At the end, I went over the schedule for practice exams and homework. I currently have her assigned to memorize 16 words and complete 1 section of an exam every single day. Also I will have her take full tests the two Saturdays before the exam in the morning.

I gave the student a diagnostic for Reading Comprehension and Language. He has excellent comprehension skills, he just needs to pay attention a little more to context. He could use some work on the spelling section. After we did those sections, we went over the sections from last week. I showed him his problems in math and gave him some practice problems to do to improve his skills. We also did a speed drill and he did very well.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Byrne in Long Island, NY
The student and I started the session by reviewing the homework. She did really well and quickly fixed and understood her mistakes. Next, we did all of the Reading section in the test prep book's practice test 1. She only got 3 wrong which is a 34. We were able to start the science section but only got up to question 28 (with only 1 wrong so far). We are meeting again on Wednesday (and maybe on Tuesday if she gets back to me and tells me that she can). For homework, she should do the English section of practice test 1, finish the science section of practice test 1, and do the whole reading section of practice test 2. The homework should take about 1.5 hours.
