How can a tutor help your child master the ISEE?

If you are hoping to send your child to an independent school for either elementary, middle, or high school, they will need to take the Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE). This exam is offered at three levels - lower, middle, and upper, based on your child's grade level. A private tutor can help your child study and prepare for each level of the exam. Varsity Tutors can assist in your search for an experienced ISEE tutor in Long Island, New York. Your child's tutor can work with them around your busy schedule at a time and place that works best for you - including online.

Long Island, New York, ISEE tutors can provide your child with the one-on-one attention that they would not receive from a study group or test prep course. This means that your child and their tutor can focus on only the areas that they need help with. Their tutor can give them a diagnostic exam to help determine what these areas are. From there, they can work together to decide if they should cover every section (verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension, and math achievement) or just a select few. Perhaps your child aced the verbal reasoning portion but struggled with decimals and fractions on the math section. In this case, they can spend less time on the sections they excelled on and focus on the sections they struggled with. They can even continue taking practice exams as a form of studying with their tutor. After they complete a section of the exam, their tutor can then score their answers and go over any incorrect responses with them. This can help your child learn the concepts that were covered by these questions, which is better than having to rely on a general answer key to tell them whether their answer was right or wrong.

Session Summaries by ISEE Tutors

ISEE Tutoring review by David in Long Island, NY
We started with some math, specifically solving for a variable, what a coefficient is and identifying the operations needed to isolate the variables. We also discussed simple exponential rules. Second, to grab a lot of new vocab, the client took an upper level verbal section. He did okay. We finished up by talking a little more about probabilities to reinforce yesterday's session.

ISEE Tutoring review by Kristie in Long Island, NY
For this session, the student and I reviewed the homework I assigned her and went over the essay she wrote. She did a good job with the essay, but we made some revisions together. She will be writing one more essay before the next session. She understands the brainstorm process and writes well but needs to be more detail oriented so we discussed how to do this. We also began the math section of the ISEE practice handbook. She does well in math. I assigned her some more math problems to complete during her school break. We also went over flashcards that she had made reflecting the vocabulary section of the test. She is performing well and is becoming very prepared for the test in January.

I covered strategies for answering questions on the verbal section of the test. We did a diagnostic test and practice questions. I had the student write a diagnostic essay that I will analyze this evening and review with him tomorrow. I assigned him some homework in the Verbal section to review and use the strategies we discussed.

ISEE Tutoring review by Katharine in Long Island, NY
For our first session together, the student and I went through practice problems simulating each section of the test so that I could get a better understanding of his strengths and weaknesses. He is a great reader, so his vocabulary is quite advanced, and his reading comprehension is strong as well. Although his mathematics are perfectly in line with his grade level, he does seem to get stressed about problems that cover things he has not learned yet, which do appear on the middle level, since that test is also taken by seventh graders. Therefore, in future sessions, I will focus on previewing some of the mathematics concepts that the student is likely to encounter in order to increase his confidence.

ISEE Tutoring review by Abbi in Long Island, NY
This session, the student needed to work on her algebra. I helped her with graphing parabolas and evaluating the patterns seen with different coefficients. She seemed to have a better understanding after some practice.
