Session Summaries by Statistics Tutors

Statistics Tutoring review by Christina in Long Island, NY
We reviewed the student's most recent Algebra 2 test. Her test was given in parts, so the information that she and I covered last week before the 2nd half of her test seemed to help her on those problems. The test was quite extensive, so we spent the majority of the time going back through her test and looking at what errors were made and why she got certain problems wrong. I wrote down tips and hints for each problem for her to go back and write it out fully again, as she gets partial credit for redoing her test problems. I have confidence that she will move forward well, especially as she and I will have many more sessions together before her next test. I think two things she really needs to focus on are memorizing equations (specifically, the law of cosine and the rules for sec, csc, and tan) and double checking all of her answers.

The student and I reviewed for his math test the next day. We spent most of the time covering the most recent material on inequalities and absolute values. The most difficult concept is when to use unions or intersections for deciding how the interval of the solution set should be represented. We discussed the nature of absolute values and some of its basic properties as well as how to solve inequalities and the importance of paying attention to the direction of the sign. We also briefly reviewed graphing lines in both slope-intercept and standard form, as well as modeling cost relationships as linear functions.

The student and I went over his math and he finished the math homework for the entire week. He also has a history test on the explorers this week, so we studied for this test as well as the vocabulary test that he has later on in the week. No concerns from the session.

We went over the student's questions: What is / is not a function, Domain and range of functions, Find k given 2 points and a slope, Find the graph when domain and range are given? We worked on how to think different approaches for problem solving and how to build strategies to develop mental math that will help him. We made detailed notes about how we solved "finding k" and all the algebra involved for future reference. We will develop games and activities so he gets used to seeing a problem in different ways.

Statistics Tutoring review by Joshua in Long Island, NY
We went over her new review. She completed all of the word problems and solving for variable problems. She remembers substitution and is becoming more adept at setting up equations from word problems. We reviewed factoring out and foiling equations for the purpose of solving for a particular variable. I gave her some additional problems to practice factoring out and solving for a variable.
