How can a Math tutor help you?

Has your child been spending countless hours trudging through math homework on topics such as number sequence and factoring? If you have noticed that they are beginning to struggle with their math course, then it may be time to find them a private tutor. Varsity Tutors can help you locate professional math tutoring in Long Island, New York. Your child can work with their very own math tutor on topics such as ratios and measurement at a place and time that you determine fits your schedule best, including online.

Long Island math tutors can help your child in a one-on-one environment, focusing solely on the learning needs of your student. This means that whichever style of learning your child prefers (kinesthetic, visual, or aural), their tutor can accommodate. Their tutor can adapt the teaching style they use to match the learning style that your child prefers, even if that means altering their technique during a session. For example, your child may prefer visual aids for addition, but learn money concepts better with an interactive lesson. Their tutor can adapt accordingly. Your child can also choose the learning pace that is most comfortable for them. Their tutor can work with them at a rate that allows for your child to absorb and retain the information being presented, and also allows for plenty of questions. Unlike a classroom filled with their peers, your child can feel comfortable stopping a lesson when they become confused and asking a whole slew of questions to gain understanding.

Session Summaries by Math Tutors

Math Tutoring review by Elliott in Long Island, NY
The student and I had another session today before her test this evening to go over a few remaining concepts and practice problems. We went over trigonometric substitutions, volume by rotating around an axis, and other various integration techniques. We worked through some of the problems in a practice test given by her professor, as well as several problems from her textbook.

The student requested that we spend the session working through some math problems. He struggles with word problems, so we spend a lot of time working through them and breaking them into smaller, more manageable bits of information. Next week we will resume PSAT prep. He has already started working with vocabulary flashcards, which should really help him on the test.

Math Tutoring review by Benjamin in Long Island, NY
The student and I worked on deepening his understanding of fractions, prime factors, and equivalent fractions and decimals. We spent a great deal of time understanding how to convert fractions from one form to another and why we perform the operations we do. I touched on the theoretical underpinnings of prime factoring and its uses in reducing fractions when using long division. We ended by working on his math homework due tomorrow.

Math Tutoring review by Michael in Long Island, NY
This day's session was focused on the student's calc class. We began with a quick review of the previous sections in the chapter, highlighting key concepts and theorems that may appear on the exam. We did some practice dealing with the derivative as a rate of change. The student made good progress on the problems, but I'd like to make sure she has a stronger intuitive grasp of the relationships between derivative functions.

Math Tutoring review by David in Long Island, NY
Good session today. We covered convergence tests for series. Specifically, the comparison test, the limit comparison test and the integral test. The student seemed to get pretty good at them. Near the end she was recognizing the right comparisons about as fast as I was.

Today we covered Scientific Notation and the Rules of Exponents. The student did not have any scores or grades today, but she does have an exam tomorrow, so our session was mostly based on practicing these two topics. The student was struggling with Power Rules for exponents the most, so we did go over that in detail. She completed a lot of practice problems for scientific notation and exponents during the session. I gave her a review sheet with the exponent rules for her to study from for her exam tomorrow.
