Writing Tutoring review by Cindy in Park Ridge, IL
Today, the student completed a short essay on The Mommy Wars comparing celeb magazines with cultural expectations of motherhood. We had a discussion for two other classes and reviewed and corrected completed work.

Writing Tutoring review by Suzanne in Park Ridge, IL
We addressed two organizational strategies for working on the student's application essays. The student has a lot of text drafted, but there needs to be a clear and focused organization to the information. For the first essay, we discussed describing the activity, but not forgetting to explain why she is proud of it. For the second, we discussed a four- pronged approach to explaining what is most appealing about the college. I advised the student to be confident about her instincts and choices and not to be afraid of being direct in answering the questions.

Writing Tutoring review by Karen in Park Ridge, IL
We just finished our first lesson. The student worked on his application essay, which he had revised. It was much improved and his additional writing revealed what was missing. I made suggestions and he agreed. Then we discussed prepositions and the student performed an exercise which clarified where he might need more grammar work. I will continue to probe his grammar and devise exercises. We also looked over my sheet of business-themed essay prompts, and we talked about how to write about one of them. His homework is to finish his application essay and development a short response to a prompt. The student also set himself an assignment: to create several sentences that contain prepositions.

Writing Tutoring review by Sam in Park Ridge, IL
Today the student and I worked again on finding and using evidence within writing to support a thesis. Today instead of focusing on Yonatan's character, we found reasons that the antagonist King in the story was a dishonorable character. This took about 40-45 minutes. We then transitioned to reading a short story called "The Monkey's Paw" for the last part of our session. The student seemed to want the break from writing and the story is excellent and well above his grade level for reading.

Writing Tutoring review by Alexandra in Park Ridge, IL
Today we continued working on editing the student's theory paper. We had a very productive discussion about how we work together to make sure that my suggestions never override his ideas. I think this showed a lot of maturity and integrity on his part and gave us a great template with which to continue our work. Well done!

Writing Tutoring review by Alex in Park Ridge, IL
Today we covered the student's writing. Although he did not particularly struggle with spelling, grammar, punctuation, or other such issues, he did struggle in relating core concepts to the prompt. As we analyzed the questions and book at large, though, I was impressed by how thoroughly he understood the material. I found this promising, as he has no shortage of intellect -- he only needs to improve his articulation and widen the depth of his analysis. Since he has been given the option to rewrite his essay for a better grade, I would like him to incorporate our discussion in his next draft before our next session. I will then re-evaluate his paper to judge his progress. I look forward to working with him again soon!
