Session Summaries by Writing Tutors

Writing Tutoring review by Luke in Mount Prospect, IL
Today we took a brief detour to modernist poetry, as the student has an in-class essay on an unknown modernist poem this week. First, I gave the student the broad characteristics of modernist poetry: disorder, pessimism, free verse, lack of faith, lack of morality, unclear sense of the self, and allusion, among others. We compared modernist poetry to a Romantic poem, "The Daffodils", by William Wordsworth. We looked also at Helen, Overture to a Dance of Locomotives, and The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock for poems characteristic of the modern era. We examined each, looking at how the literary devices contributed to their significance as modern poems. Aside from poetry, we also looked at a summary paragraph the student had written about a Lie Detector test. I pointed out a few locations where he could have been more concise. We concluded our session with a review of comma usage. I had removed commas from a number of famous quotes from literature, and the student replaced the commas where they should belong.

After becoming acquainted with each of our backgrounds, we spent the entire session reviewing the 4 types of sentences (declarative, interrogative, explanatory and imperative). Then the student did a number of exercises from a workbook on sentence structure and recognition. I left her with a small written project where she will read an editorial and write her own opinion. I am interested in seeing the quality of her writing.

Writing Tutoring review by Andrew in Mount Prospect, IL
The student was struggling with composing his essay for this week, so we discussed the prompt further and went over some strategies for composing thesis sentences, and building an argument. We went on to discuss the primary text further, and I helped him compose his thesis statement. We also reviewed his first assignment for the course. He received a 4/4 A letter grade, but his teacher emphasized incorporating feedback with the next assignment, so we reviewed the assignment. We made an appointment to review his next assignment for Sunday.

Writing Tutoring review by Aaron in Mount Prospect, IL
We started class by going over homework. She did well on the spelling assignments and showed some good improvements with dialogue. We redid some of her writing homework to expand her description of setting details (both sensory and supporting details) and character details (character development and backstory). She sometimes wanted to introduce nonsensical details, but I encouraged her to try to take the assignments seriously and to see what we could create if we allowed ourselves room to try new things. We practiced writing from different points of view in preparation for the upcoming narrative writing assignments. I'm definitely seeing improvement in her ability to expand, describe, and express her ideas. She has a point of view assignment for homework, along with some vocab practice we had started in class.

Writing Tutoring review by Saleh in Mount Prospect, IL
The first student is showing a lot of progress, most of which I believe is facilitated by the fact that the topic he is writing on is something he enjoys. I'm moving him from more abstract writing into more research-based writing, as synthesizing large amounts of information is critical to writing well in the future. The second student could do with expanding the scope of his writing a little bit. Currently, his ideas seem to be confined to what we come up together during our outlining sessions. I've been working with him to slow down his writing and reread what he's already written, because he is able to correct mistakes when he sees them. I would also like to see his progress when it comes to research-based writing.

Writing Tutoring review by Jonah in Mount Prospect, IL
The student and I continued working through his essay. We reviewed his interview notes, found a few sources, and went through how to make sense of cited sources. He now has to read and process the sources as well as find one or two more. With this information, he will begin to synthesize his ideas into writing. At that point, we will meet and discuss more strategies and writing possibilities.
