Session Summaries by Organic Chemistry Tutors

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Scott in Mount Prospect, IL
During our session today, the student and I worked more with MATLAB software. We wrote several functions in the program, which would take certain inputs and give an output value. We had to make sure that the lines of code that we wanted to be executed at the same time were indented properly, and we had to use the same variable names when trying to access these variables from different parts. To finish our session today, we found an approximation of the value of pi by using a sum.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Kevyn in Mount Prospect, IL
Today was mainly review on several topics that were covered over the past semester. This included Diels-Alder reactions; 1, 2- and 1, 4-additions; SN1, SN2, E1, and E2; hydroboration; hydrogenation; and other reactions. Other concepts that came up were resonance and IUPAC naming. Overall, the student is doing well, and as long as she keeps up her studying like she has been for her exam, I think she will be well prepared.

Today we covered SN1/ E1 and SN2/E2 reactions. The student and I talked about the characteristics of each reaction, and ways to differentiate between them. After that, she worked on a worksheet from class that covered the material. She was able to answer the questions on her own, and was confident with the material!

Today we reviewed for the student's upcoming exam on mechanisms and reactions involving alkenes. We briefly discussed naming and E/Z nomenclature, oxymercuration, demercuration, Markovnikov addition, anti-Markovnikov addition, halogenation, and many other concepts. With each topic, we discussed the mechanism and the reason for the product stereochemistry. I then gave review tips on topics for the student to work on. Overall, I told him he was doing well and he seemed confident going into his exam.

Today, the student and I finished going over her previous tests and started going over tough problems on the new material for her final. We will meet up next on Friday to continue going over material. She is doing very well, and I think that she will do great on her final coming up on Monday if we continue attacking difficult problems.
