Today we read two more chapters in Judy Moody Gets Famous. We have one more chapter to go. In the story, Judy mentions Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman doctor, so we also read a short excerpt on her, and discussed how she influenced other women. After the two chapters, the student worked with me to answer comprehension questions. I also quizzed her with other questions from previous chapters, because next week we will be playing Jeopardy over the entire book. Her interest in reading is continuing to grow and she already has a list of books she hopes to read next!

Since the student is currently in finals, we've been able to focus on skill building. On Wednesday we worked on improving sentences, writing conclusions, and a few reading comprehension exercises. She still needed help with conclusions, but every week, she seems to understand a bit more what's expected.

The student and I met today to begin work in earnest on her college essays. Based on the list we made in our last session of all her due dates and scholarship possibilities, I made a master schedule of drafting. Each essay will get two weeks, with last month left over for polishing work on her theater portfolio. She approved the schedule, and then I asked her to generate a list of her awards and extracurricular activities. Once that was compiled, I talked her through the list, asking her to expand on her thoughts, feelings, and growth as related to her activities. And at the end of the session, I had her draft a portion of her common app essay, based on the expanded list. We had a quick conversation about tone and length based on that, and she will upload a first draft of her common app.

The student has obtained the preparatory packet for the assessment testing at the end of the year. The packet lists several reading passages with instructions for the type of reading comprehension questions that will be covered. She matriculated at the school after the class had read these packets, so I asked her to get them from her teachers. We went through the list of ~85 spelling words in the packet, 30 of which will be on the test. She spelled all of them except six correctly, and I asked her to write each of those words three times for homework. We moved on to the vocabulary list, and I asked her to define each word of the list for me. When she had trouble, I reminded her. I asked her to sound out the spelling of each unknown word (and corrected where necessary) so that she could look up and write down the dictionary definition for homework.

Student A was quizzed on writing concepts that we have covered (i.e. coherence, thesis sentences, supporting sentences). He began typing his Mayan document and continued editing with this final draft. He and I went over formatting for manuscripts. Student B is practicing words and is still working on blending sounds, in addition to whole language strategies. He has a good memory and retains information well.
