Session Summaries by Writing Tutors

Writing Tutoring review by Luke in Morton Grove, IL
Today we covered descriptive writing. I pointed out key elements of description including specificity; engaging the five senses; and using metaphor, hyperbole, simile, and personification. I had the student read an excerpt from "Writing Tools" about twisting cliches to make them fresh. We then looked at a story I had written, as well as two poems I hadn't, for inspiration on utilizing these devices of description. The student wrote a descriptive paragraph, making sure to follow the writing process we discussed last week. I offered him critiques on his paragraph and encouraged him to be playful with words when possible, as this will keep readers captivated by his writing. Next, we reviewed comma usage from previous weeks and learned a few more uses for commas. Finally, we looked at the student's persuasive essay he previously wrote, paying attention to his comma errors. I also noted his essay's strengths and weaknesses. For next time, he'll revise and add to his descriptive paragraph. He will also look for three examples of cliches and three examples of broken cliches as he goes about his week.

Writing Tutoring review by Benjamin in Morton Grove, IL
The student made the recommended edits to her essay and sent me the new draft. I reviewed the essay before we met and gave her advice about specific word and sentence structure choices. We also spent some time looking at two new sections that she added. The recommended changes were few and relatively minor. She is comfortable with the essay as one that she can send to schools.

We went over a writing summer assignment where the student needed to write about going to an amusement park. We reviewed many strategies where he was asked to write down what he remembered and use it in the essay. He wrote down a web where he wrote some of his ideas down. He has completed the essay and shown major accomplishments from his sessions.

Writing Tutoring review by Vanessa in Morton Grove, IL
We went over his college application today. There were 4 prompts. He read through each one and we discussed changes. He is a strong writer so the changes were mostly cosmetic with some punctuation additions. We will meet again tomorrow. His attitude was good and we got a lot accomplished.

Writing Tutoring review by Maria in Morton Grove, IL
We went over his draft and we discussed punctuation. We also worked on reading a narrative and making corrections in the narrative. The student was focused and he was able to identify mistakes. I purposely made mistakes and he would tell me that I missed something. The activity that we completed went over questions asking if the narrative had certain characteristics.
