Statistics Tutoring review by David in Morton Grove, IL
For this session the student and I went over his lab assignment. He has a solid understanding of the material so I had him walk me through what he had done and what he would do in each of the situations assigned to him. In all he is doing well with the material. His exam is on Friday and I am confident he will do well. He completed the assignment with time to spare so we worked through some practice problems out of his text book.

We covered parabolas and ellipses from their equations to their characteristics and graphs. We reviewed many problems about them that were assigned homework for the student. He seemed to catch on quite well. He is organized and had a list of problems for which he needed help. His work is legible and neat.

Statistics Tutoring review by Anna in Morton Grove, IL
The student and I covered a lot of ground on Friday. We spent the first half hour of Saturday's session reviewing the three different methods of solving quadratic equations: unFOILing, completing the square, and employing the quadratic formula. The student is very good with implementing the quadratic formula and also understands well how to "unFOIL," but is still getting the hang of completing the square. Sometimes she does it 100% perfectly. Completing the square is somewhat of a lengthy process, and the trick is really to remember that you are adding a number (b/2)^2 such that you can condense the left side of the equation into a binomial squared, which will always be in the form (x+(b/2))^2. We then reviewed the basics we'd done with logarithms: the definition of a log and how to convert between exponent and log forms. We spent the rest of the session learning and using the different properties of logs: multiplication rule, division rule, power rule, and a couple others. The student was able to recognize that the multiplication and division properties of logs are exactly the same as the corresponding properties of exponents! The property which required a little more practice to get the hang of was the power rule: log base a of m to the power of r is equal to r times log base a of m. We did some practice with simplifying logarithmic expressions (for example log5 + logx - log2) and also with solving basic equations with logs (for example 7^x=100). We will pick up with these next week, after she and her family come back from vacation. The student asked that I send her some practice problems for her to complete in the mean time, which I was thrilled to hear! She is really getting the hang of the stuff we are doing and I am impressed that she wants to make the effort to stay familiar with it during her time away.

Statistics Tutoring review by Mavis in Morton Grove, IL
We worked on math, preparing him to discuss his math homework with his small group the next day. The student needs some writing practice, so we also wrote a personal narrative essay about his experience in the drama club.
