Tutoring review by Peter in Solvay, NY
After brief introductions, we went over the student's goals for his calculus course this year (ending the semester with a B average). We discussed what he has found the most helpful in tutoring sessions in the past. He also told me about his teacher's grading policy, homework policy, and the format of the quizzes and tests. We briefly discussed how to remedy the fact that he often does not finish his tests. We reviewed calculating volume using integration with washers and discs. We also covered how to calculate volume using integration for 3-D figures without circular cross-sections. After a review of the material, he worked through some homework problems. He was very focused on mastering the material, and I feel very confident that he will successfully achieve a B average or better this semester!

We continued working on slope/intercept problems and began reviewing for the student's end-of-year exam. He seems to understand slope/intercept form, and we will review proportions.

We reviewed radicals for the student's test on Monday. I gave him extra practice problems to make sure that he was ready for his test. He grasped the concept and should do well on his test.

Tutoring review by Aidan in Solvay, NY
Tonight we worked on the application of finding maximums and minimums using derivatives. We have gone over taking derivatives and finding maximums and minimums a good amount, so he is comfortable with doing those things. The area where I saw he was least strong in this topic was picking where to apply using the derivative to find the maximums and minimums that he was looking for. We went over some practice problems and he was getting the hang of it. He can solve these problems better now than he could at the start of the session, but I would say after one more session of practice he will be comfortable solving these problems on his own.

Today, we reviewed u-substitution, Newton's method, Mean Value Theorem, and the average value of functions. Not only did we go over practice problems, we were also able to review the student's remaining problems on her homework.

Tutoring review by Ryan in Solvay, NY
I began with the student by teaching some basic rules for the writing section of the test. In some practice questions I saw the writing section is where he struggled the most. After doing many practice sections, he did show some improvement on this part of the test. We also practiced some of the harder math problems he was struggling with. I illustrated some ways to solve the problems. We also practiced the reading section focusing on pacing and attention to detail, and he performed relatively well on this section.
