We reviewed applications of the derivative, including optimization problems, finding critical values, and testing them. We worked several different problems, going over different scenarios and going over how to work the problems, which the student has a better understanding of.

Tutoring review by Katelyn in Plainville, NY
The student had an exam last week over chapter 5- slope-intercept, point-slope, and standard forms of linear equations. His class has started a new lesson on inequalities; so far his teacher has only covered simple inequalities with one direction (i.e. -x<4 or x>4/3). We covered rules for adding and multiplying inequalities and also compared open vs. closed end points on a number line. I walked him through some simple two directional inequalities (the example I used was -3<3x<6). We had 45 minutes left to do college readiness practice and were able to complete the 8th grade non-calculator portion as well as the 7th grade non-calculator portion. We have finished 4 problems on the 7th grade calculator based practice exam and will pick up here next week in our spare time.

Tutoring review by Gabriel in Plainville, NY
The student did very well for her first session. She and I worked on the translation and pronunciation of a poem she will need to memorize and present to her class for extra credit. We went over the poem together so that she could boost her confidence and practice saying it aloud. She also completed some noun and verb practice by answering and translating words and sentences into Spanish. She also practiced her conversation skills by talking about restaurant topics, such as ordering with the waiter and inviting friends to dinner. This was done in accordance to her class's standards as specified in her syllabus.

Tutoring review by Michael in Plainville, NY
The student and I talked about trapezoidal and Riemann sums. He needed help understanding the difference between right, left and midpoint Riemann sums. After going over the material, however, he seemed to very much be in control of the material. He mentioned that he has a quiz tomorrow on these topics and that he now feels more prepared and ready to take it.

We covered addition and subtraction. The student had math homework so she completed her worksheets which consisted of words problems and addition and subtraction facts. She did remember which signs were for addition and subtraction initially but she worked through the problems by counting on our fingers. By the end she did very well.

Tutoring review by Renato in Plainville, NY
Today was the last session before the exam tomorrow. We went through all the student's doubts; we also checked the constructions in the packet. Next we reviewed the trigonometry of the triangle. I checked his understanding and he understood all the material we reviewed. He is more confident solving this kind of problem. Overall the wins from this session is that he had a better understanding of theorems, similarity of triangles, trigonometry and related topics, and he is ready for the exam tomorrow.
