Session Summaries by Pre-Calculus Tutors

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Adrian in Merrillville, IN
For this session we spent a lot of time going over what derivatives look like visually. I gave her a graph and then asked her to identify the critical points and the points of inflection and then had her draw the derivative of said graph. As we went through the exercises, I could tell that it was helping her understand the concepts a little better.

Today we went over a few more problems from the student's practice test booklet. He's on spring break right now and his class has finished the book assignments so we're just going to be doing AP practice from here on out. We did short answer as well as multiple choice practice problems. The material is essentially everything we've covered over the course of the class. Some topics we covered specifically were biases, study design, regression output, analyzing distributions, and probability. I also covered some good test taking tips for use on the AP test. We will be continuing with much the same format on Saturday.

Today, we covered the student's math homework on surface areas of various three-dimensional objects. In addition to completing the homework, we did some extra problems as preparation for his math test on Friday. We will continue to review this topic and prepare for the test during the next meeting. With the extra time, we also did some reading for his history class and completed the related worksheet.

We covered how to solve trigonometry problems involving double angles and half angle. It was a lot of information for one session so I tried to break the information down into smaller pieces. We practiced several questions and I asked the student to practice some more before our next meeting on Monday. His love for math is gradually increasing.

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Nimia in Merrillville, IN
The student had a test last week in precalculus. The first half of the session was spent reviewing her test and clearing up any mistakes she made. The test covered trigonometric functions and solving angles using the unit circle and trigonometric rules. The rest of the time was spent with her doing online quizzes she has to turn in for class. The quiz she worked on reviews amplitudes and periods of sin and cos waves.

We went through the student's study guide for his PreCalc quiz on Friday. He needs a little more practice on the material before the quiz, but he is getting it. He should be reviewing the class notes and the study guide to make sure he understands the material. I also gave him some strategies so he can check his work during the quiz, which hopefully will help him avoid making avoidable mistakes under pressure. The quiz is on definitions and formulas more than it is on calculations, so he should be sure to make sure he memorizes the formulas and knows how to explain them and manipulate them effectively.
